onionring: I guess that was a common problem w/ the Finest's. I also have a Thomas/Piazza that's the same way.

And for the '99 Compliments...Still missing the McGwire side refractor.

What other Thomas variations did you find in this set? Maybe you have some more I don't have (hopefully of McGwire/Thomas).

I've found a few other's of McGwire:

Refractor w/out saying "R" or "Refractor" on it

I've also seen a huge mix of some that say "R" and some that say "Refractor" I haven't found a card that had both though...

That's the only Thomas/McGwire I have from that set. Kinda pissed me off...I bought it from a list (no scan) and that was the refractor I was sent. I just have the Thomas/Piazza that is just like the McGwire. Says "R" but it's not a refractor.

I honestly had to take a few hours and come back to respond - I'm pretty confident that my laptop warranty doesn't cover me putting an elbow through the screen.

Man, until you put together a checklist yourself, you can't begin to understand how hard it really is. So many nuances and variations it's ridiculous. Beckett barely scratches the surface of a collectors master list.

;)

I get no sympathy from the band of Big Hurt Collectors.

Kidding. :D

Most of them are kind of enough to help me - when I publish. (yeah, yeah - c'mon fellas - it's coming!)

The early 90's was the hardest group of cards I've ever had to checklist. It has taken a group of about 15 of us over a year to put together a master list and we still aren't done! The second you think you are done, you find 10 more. And this is coming from a group of people that have all been actively collecting for the player's entire career. It's amazing yet fun!

<nodding>

Although I take exception to your description of the word 'fun'. I hear it in my own skull as: It's amazing yet 'terrifically frustrating!'.

 Ya know what would go really really nice w/ these?
I can tell ya one thing for sure, I almost set a new record for the highest you've seen it sell for. Now I just gotta find a Green w/out that nasty line.

Question: The '87 Auburn Tigers...Were they printed on a cheap, thin card stock like the '87 BDK Blue?

You know, I still haven't found a refractive mcgwire/thomas yet...Now I'm wondering....

1998 Pinnacle Performers Swing For The Fence Upgrade. You'll have to do the research yourself on this one. <wink> But if one of your guys are checklisted in the group - then he likely has a corresponding upgrade. (Note: This is not the "Dealer Exchange" card)

Weren't most of these destroyed? My sources have told me 6 McGwire's exist. Usually when that happens, the full set made it out which means 6+ sets exist (and I'm pretty sure one was made per player in the checklist but I'm not 100% sure)

theses??

That's why it's susceptible to potential forgeries. I suggest whenever possible that the purchase be for the complete Auburn Set - or a slabbed version from one of the reputable companies - PSA, BGS, SCG.

I know the last comment has controversial tones to it - it's just an opinion, one of many differing views regarding reputable third-party grading.

That's one - the "mirror" version on the lower left corner.

I spoke with Chris Kurdelski - who seems to have the connections to the source - and he's not talking.

Not that I blame him entirely. It's sort of having the name to Sutter's Mill in '48 (that's 1848 for you yutes) I wouldn't go around talking until I was through picking up the bigger nuggets. I'm sure we all would. <g>

Onion - Have no idea how many were produced or how many made it 'out'. I can't even begin to hazard a guess, though I wouldn't be surprised to hear 'six'. But then again, I wouldn't be taken aback to hear 'sixty' either. So little hard information to go on - the crumbs we have is just too few. Very much the 'Blind Men With An Elephant' parable.

I've even attempted to contact the Texas Department Of Labor to see if Pinnacle Brands' records of employees was available to the public. No dice. <shrug>

I was concerned after receiving my first 1987 Auburn Thomas as it was on pretty cheap card stock....but I have three total from three different collectors and there is no variation in quality, which either means that I have three fake, or all are real. I am getting two slabbed by Beckett this weekend at the Sun Times show in Rosemont, Il, so I should know pretty soon.

Speaking of strange variations, I happened to be looking through my 1995 Thomas cards and noticed the 1995 Team Pinnacle card with Thomas/Bagwell. I happen to have two of these and noticed that on one card the dufex is only on the Thomas side, and the foil on the Bagwell side. Then I noticed on my other card that The Thomas side has foil and the Bagwell side has dufex.

Hi Randy,

For '95 - that was an intentional design. An early sign of 'things to come' with manufacturers going hog-wild producing variations instead of solidly designed different cards. <g>

I think it finally reached the pinnacle (pun intended) of lunacy with the production of Topps Moments & Milestones.

Lance ;-D

P.S. Oddly, I find this easier than email. <g>
