And are you glad he is out of the NL West?
Of course! Now it looks like the Padres won't be as big of a contender this year unless they acquire someone big. Only contender will be the Rockies.

It really is a tremendous deal for the Red Sox - they get the player they've been coveting for some time and they do so while keeping much of the young talent. They also have the money to still sign Werth or Crawford.....and when it's all said and done they should remain under the luxury cap and are not in a bad situation money-wise for the future.

Question to any Padres fans - Gonzalez was a guy (until this past year) playing for a bad team and unless I'm wrong on this he was also playing close to home....I think any time a player like that moves to a Boston/New York where the attention, expectations and pressure is insane it does raise a little concern regarding how they will handle that......so curious if you guys have seen any sort of red-flags (in his performance/personality, etc.) that may be cause for concern or if he looks to be a guy that will thrive in such an environment?

Ok, I saw the possible trade thread but he changed the topic title.

Sad day to be a Padres fan but the trade had to happen. The team wasn't going to pay him, and the Padres weren't going anywhere this season, might as well let Gonzo go to a team that will compete and pay him. Good to see he's going to place where people will recognize him and actually put a team around him.
He will FINALLY get known, lol.
And I'm very happy for that, might get a Gonzo Sox jersey. :)

Contract predictions? Apparently he's seeking Ryan Howard money (5/125).

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6/125 deal or something similar.

I`m pretty sure Lars Anderson is happy ..

Yeah, I bet he's putting down some stout about now.

I suppose he's a good backup shouldn't anything happen. If Youk goes down, however, who can back him up?

As a Red Sox fan living in San Diego, I couldn't be happier. A Gone won't have a problem in the world adjusting to Boston and the spotlight. He's the anti-Manny and will thrive. I can't wait for opening day!

So Beltre won't be resigned, Youkilis will move to third, and Gonzalez will take over first?

Beltre 2010 Stats:

0.321 AVG - 0.365 OBP - 0.919 OPS - 28 HR - 102 RBI - 49 2B

Gonzalez 2010 Stats:

0.298 AVG - 0.393 OBP - 0.904 OPS - 31 HR - 101 RBI - 33 2B

It's likely that Gonzalez will do better in fenway poark, but how will he adjust to the AL?

Trust me, I don't like seeing the Sox get Gonzalez, but is Gonzalez/Youkilis really that much of an upgrade over Youkilis/Beltre?
