PSA set registry. Competition to have the highest graded collection of a set or player.

I'd much rather spend my money on a nice card than a cheap card that grades well. Also, the PSA set registry for a 1996 Topps Griffey Gem Mint 10 may be low, but that's only because people don't waste the money to have a card like that graded. I probably have 10 or so 1996 Topps Griffeys in my collection that would grade PSA 10. There are probably 50000+ Griffey 1996 Topps cards out there that would grade gem mint, so the whole PSA set registry for a card like that is a bit pointless, in my opinion.

I completely agree.

BenG76, perhaps you can answer this question for me. I've never understood why people get a $1 base card graded. Why have a 1996 Topps Griffey Jr base card sent in for grading? The cost to grade it far exceeds the value of the card. I'm not trying to bash you for having those, and perhaps you didn't have them graded yourself, but I have always wondered that and I felt now may be an appropriate time to ask.

The Gem Mint 10 rookie cards (especially the Upper Deck) are really nice though!

I will admit I planned on doing the Griffey Topps registry set. Which is basically the base Topps card for every year while he played. I still may work on it honestly but I have other things I am working on at the moment. I didn't spend much on the cards honestly. I would guess the average would be $5/$6. I am also working on a 1976 PSA graded set in PSA 8 or better. It was the year I was born. Not sure if I will ever finish it but I am doing it because I want to. I have no chance of competing with the guys at the top of the registry and I don't care honestly.

Fair enough BenG76. I guess it makes sense if you're doing something like collecting the base Topps cards from every year. That 1976 graded set sounds pretty cool. Good luck with it.

I see your point of view here and that may be why I have backed off from getting as many graded cards as of late. I started collecting early last year after not collecting any cards since around 2000. The Griffey rookies were the first cards I really went after and I wanted them graded 10's. As for the registry sets I just kind of like working on them at times. I didn't really care if my collection is number one although it is neat if they are. I don't have deep enough pockets for that stuff. The only registry set I have at number 1 is my 91 Ultra Gold set and only one other person is really working on it besides me and we have messaged each other and tried to help each other out.

Yeah I understand. There are some sets out there that people like for various reasons, such as it being a really special set during your childhood. For me (I was born in 1983), the 1992 Donruss Elites are one of the most iconic of all time. Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas were in the checklist. I was 9 years old when those bad boys came out, and I always dreamed of pulling JUST ONE from a pack. Never did though, haha. So, I now have most of that set (I never did pick up the Ripken auto...), but I don't have any graded. It is all about personal preference. Some people like their cards slabbed and graded, and I get that. I just never understood why collectors grade some of the cheaper base cards, but I guess I can kind of understand why, if they are collecting say all the Topps base cards of a particular player. Collecting is all about what makes you happy! Thanks for taking the time to chat with me.

Friarg, I'm still waiting on that Allen and Ginter framed mini red auto so we can complete our trade! They HAVE to make that card sooner or later. Griffey signed everything, or so we think...

no worries - I'm keeping your Griffey auto safe for ya!

Hey guys! New to the site here. I love the cards on this thread. Amazing!! I've been a Griffey fanatic for exactly 24 years! Ironic right...

I thought I'd start off with a recent pick-up and a question. Why in the world would a card company put a swatch of jersey in a card - that doesn't match the jersey color the player is wearing on the same card???? I think the visual effect would be stronger and the card more appealing if the jersey colors matched. I've got several game used cards where this has happened and it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Anyway looking forward to going back thru this thread. I'm on page 40 so it will take awhile... Thanks to Magicpapa for directing me here and Happy Father's Day to all Dads.09_0007.jpg

magicpapa Its recessed with a tiny bit of wiggle room to keep it from sticking - I've heard the horror stories, IMO the best is a screw down that is a tiny bit larger (either the recessed area or from side to side) this allows for a bit of air to get to the card and prevent it from sticking.

Did you lose one from your PC or just see damage of someone else's misfortune?
