Harvey a no show for workout

For the first time in nine years, the Mets reported to their home field to prepare for a playoff series. And star pitcher Matt Harvey wasn't there, stuck in tunnel traffic so severe that manager Terry Collins told him to turn around.

General manager Sandy Alderson confirmed that Harvey did not show up to Tuesday's workout, which he called "mandatory."

Alderson declined further comment.

"Truly, I just screwed up," Harvey said in a brief address to media. He declined to take questions. But he said he explained the situation to teammates and vowed it would not happen again.

"Today was not the greatest," said Harvey, who said there was "no excuse" for his absence.

Collins said he got a call from Harvey explaining his situation. Asked if he considered the absence excused, Collins said "not neccesarily."

Harvey, the only player not to make the workout, is slated to pitch Game 3 of the NLDS against the Dodgers.

"I'm concerned about the guys who are here," said Mets captain David Wright, who sidestepped a question about Harvey. "The guys who are here had a great workout."

Always see guys taking max contacts to wear pinstripes as sellouts for some reason. Was nice to see detroit, Toronto, Texas and some other clubs get the stars the last few years. Personal opinion of course

Boras must be happy - has a client who is so important that Boras, and not the team like the Mets, can call the shots like adding a surprise innings limit or getting to decide what workouts his client to attend or not.

I wonder if having Boras as the agent will make Harvey pretty hard to move when the Mets get sick of all these surprise demands. The Mets just have to say Harvey is their property and they will do what they want whether that is to wreck Harvey's career or not.

Clubs are not the best judges of whats good for a pitcher and I think its logical the pitcher has to take part of that into their control.

who cares about medically. Matt Harvey is essentially the property of the Mets since the mets are his employer. The Mets are free to put innings limits on him or otherwise treat him like a china doll and try to let his talent translate into wins for the club. The Mets could also go run him out there to start five straight games and see Harvey potentially get injured and miss a lot of time or end his career. They could even suspend or release Harvey if Harvey complains about all those consecutive starts. It's all up to the mets how they want to handle harvey and the millions invested in him. MLB customary practice is to handle athletes as an investment that produces wins so you know the Mets are not likely to try to make him damaged goods for another team.

No sir. MLB is his employer and he has a union.

your premise doesn't really hold water. If his surgeon or medical team recommend he be shut down and the mets disagree, they can release him and eat the rest of his contract. There are rules around a club or employer denying the recommendations of doctors.
