I seem to remember something about the dots, lighter shade and card stock.

Now I could be 100% remembering wrong so with that I dont like the middle one for being lighter than the others.

Wow. Looked around the internet for a bit and could not find anything. Amazing. People talk about it being faked, but not how to identify. I used to have a great book that was all about detecting counterfeits. Even talked about a 1987 F Ruben Sierra iirc being faked. lol Here's a link to some info on fakes on a small site I never finished. http://cardboardscams.webs.com/

Here's the book. I THINK it's in there. ;)

All I found was this -(i.e., the lighter shade, the dot-matrix makeup of the photo, and the card stock).

The dot matrix is the key Paul. Just compare them to a run of the mill 84 Donruss common.

Holy cow! I had no idea anybody would fake a Don Mattingly anything but I guess I wasn't really collecting that much in 84. I knew about the McGwire but I still don't know if mine is fake or not. Mostly because I'm too lazy to dig it out.

From 85-88 this was one of the hottest cards in the hobby EVER, going for $100 or more. No high-tech traits meant it was easily counterfeited.

The way I always checked was by looking at "Donruss '84"

If it's blurry then it's fake.

You can also flip it over as some of the fakes were eventually stamped "counterfeit" or "reprint"

Yes sir. The Leaf logo and silver striping along the bottom left are pixelated, rather than solid.
