In case you didn't see where this was going, I had this arguement with a friend of mine the other day. He went on and on about how Bonds "stole" one of the greatest records in all of sports history. I came back with the fact that the PEDs have hurt his rep so much, that the vast majority (I said 70%, turns out it's closer to 80&) of baseball fans don't care enough about Bonds to even really know what the new record is.
My point was that, for all his efforts, Bonds will only be remembered for the PED scandal and the "record" that he holds isn't even as memorable as Ruth or Aaron's. At least, no one can even remember the number.
I will admit though, this could be an influence of time. I'm not sure how ingrained Hank's number was in the years following his retirement; but Ruth's number was so respected that it's now the 3rd place number and it is still better known that Bond's.
