In case you didn't see where this was going, I had this arguement with a friend of mine the other day. He went on and on about how Bonds "stole" one of the greatest records in all of sports history. I came back with the fact that the PEDs have hurt his rep so much, that the vast majority (I said 70%, turns out it's closer to 80&) of baseball fans don't care enough about Bonds to even really know what the new record is.

My point was that, for all his efforts, Bonds will only be remembered for the PED scandal and the "record" that he holds isn't even as memorable as Ruth or Aaron's. At least, no one can even remember the number.

I will admit though, this could be an influence of time. I'm not sure how ingrained Hank's number was in the years following his retirement; but Ruth's number was so respected that it's now the 3rd place number and it is still better known that Bond's.

one thing you have now is the constant news coverage and the sway of the sportscasters. they put their opinions on everything. if babe ruth lived today he would have the same scrutiny that arod, pujols, and bonds live with. another thing and this might be the only time that barry bonds has been hurt by race is the fact that hank aaron was the first african american chasing down the ultimate sports figure. 3 decades of one person holding the record will also take a large amount of the cultural pride off of an event.

Not really.That's what the answer most people gave them was.I never checked so I didn't know if it was right or wrong but it did sound right or close.But the gist they were trying to get at was that a lot of people don't care about Bonds so nobody would even remember how many total homers he had. :lol:

Records lose their UMPH until someone starts approaching them again. If A-Rod starts approaching Bonds' numbers then everyone will know the correct answer. Aaron's record was a different situation and somewhat without comparison.

The only problem with this (as you have noted) is that the wound of PED's is still new & hasn't quite scabbed over yet, much less healed. The 20-30 something's & on up will probably remember Bonds as a Great player whom cheated to get to the record, but the younger generation may overlook it a bit (not singling out Bonds as today's fan's do & just look at the era as a whole as having dabbled in PED's) & may paint Bonds' legacy as a victim of his element/surrounding's; instead of the villain of his era! I myself, on the outside looking in, am rather disgusted that he was able to cheat H.Aaron out of the MLB record (as it just seems wrong to me); so this should show that I am in no way am a "Bonds Backer"! I just think the next generation won't feel the "hurt" or be "let-down" by what has recently occurred & what is going on now, the wound's will have healed & I think there will be more acceptance (or at least a better understanding) that it was not just Bonds & the people pushing this stuff on the player's, or in the least turning a blind eye, were in the upper echelon of Major League Baseball (Trainer's, Manager's, GM's, Team Owner's, & even the Commish)! Steroids were basically accepted for so long in MLB & then all of a sudden, after the fact, it becomes a known that the public is outraged & the Upper Echelon throw's the lower member's on the totem pole to the raging mob!
Sorry for the long explanation but I thought it was needed to show my point of view on this matter!
