They can be a pain until you find a way that's best for you. I'm a self taught PS guy and the best way I've found is to:

rectangular select- make the absolute smallest rectangle you can --- > edit -----> stroke -----> 1pt thickness.

Added a thickness shot to show how nice and solid these are coming out.
