What are some thoughts from non collectors that you have heard?

As a card store owner, I've heard a ton.

Obviously, the number one thought is that "old" cards from the 80s are worth money.

But there's many others like ANY card from the 70s or 60s is worth a good amount or that any Jordan card has to be valuable.

On the flip side, I've also encountered people who thought that today's cards are worthless because they know their 80s stuff is worth nothing or because they saw a one sided tv report on the decline of cards.

"there's way too many brands" a family member has told me in the past when my christmas wish list included surprise me with a box of cards. They went to the local store in the early 2000s and asked for something current-year and was directed to a huge display of current year baseball wax.

that's the philosophy for me on christmas or birthday usually asking for cash for a box (or to offset the cost of a box since I don't expect that much in cash) so I can use my hobby expertise and shopping around to get a box.

In the past, when people relentlessly hounded me with the whole "what do you want for Christmas" bit, I just said baseball cards, it doesn't matter what kind (I wasn't actually going to get anything I wanted anyway, but it shut them up). Then they gave the same complaint about there being too many to choose from. It's like "Press Any Key to Continue". When presented with options, despite the instructions that literally any choice is fine, they become overwhelmed and lost. Now I just plead with people not to get me anything. I don't need any more random blasters of Topps Opening Day (got 3 of those this year)!

They're stupid to collect. You're stupid for collecting them. What are you going to do with them all(as if you had some grand scheme cooked up)? Are you going to sell them all? Why do you collect them? Why do you waste your money? What's your girlfriend/wife think? Do you have a girlfriend/wife? Oh, those must be worth a fortune.

This is literally what I hear. Every question full of bias and/or ignorance.

If there was a sports card nerd section of the ThinkGeek store, this would be a t-shirt.

Questions about the gum. Do the card packs still have gum? What about the old packs: is the gum still good? Do you really chew all the gum?

Had to chuckle a little when i saw this. There have been plenty of people who have been seen wandering sports shows, shops and retail stores in the trading card areas who we all probably have though the same question about. If you have seen photos from early hobby periodicals and such, it does kind of paint quite the nerdy picture for card collectors.
Do you have a girlfriend/wife?

Time for a wives and girlfriends (or boyfriends/husbands) of card nerds photo thread!

Why does this make you so happy? What's the benefit? It's just a waste of your time. Find somethng that will do you good. Save the trees.

Yeah, and some chick will walk up and kiss the dude right on the mouth and your jaw drops to the floor wondering how the hell he bagged her. One thing getting older has taught me is not to underestimate people. To me, a lot of people aren't interested in cards and that's ok. But they'll turn right around and tell you about something they like that sounds so ridiculous it's sad. Those are the type of people I do not enjoy the company of. I always try to be fair. You show me disrespect because I collect something, I'm going to think you're a little immature and not waste my time bothering with you.

You put them in a box? And then what do you do with them?

The thing that usually kills me is that many of these questions come from women who spend $500 on a purse or $150 on a pair of shoes or $300 on a dress.

Or else guys who spend $200/week at the bar, or blow a grand at the casino in one night.

Another thing I hear is that non collectors can't tell that their 1982 topps features a stamped auto, not an actual one.

I do often get the "I've seen it on eBay for......." line which always ends in an extremely high price.

And like on pawn stars, I'll explain to them that anyone can set a price at any number.

Sounds like my wife, Charlie.

Which then I ask her if she wants me to do the second part of your post. She just grumbles away.
