I can only fit 10 names in the poll, so I chose these guys out of the next three years of newly eligible HOF candidates as my picks for definite HOFers. Which of these guys do you think will be first-ballot inductees?

I believe Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, Thomas, Biggio and Pedro will go first ballot. IMO Kent deserves to, but could easily get overlooked due to the crowded field and how ornery he was.

Looking at Smoltz's numbers, even with his very successful time in the 'pen (of which only one season stands out as being truly spectacular) I don't see him as a 1st ballot guy. Only placed at all in the Cy Young voting as a starter twice (albeit winning once and finishing 4th the other time.) I kind of feel like his grouping with Glavine and Maddux makes him look a little better than he really was. (Still a great pitcher, but don't see 1st ballot, and I could hear an argument that he's not a HOF'er at all.)

Similarly Schilling is a lot of fun to debate. Not really a great pitcher for most of his career, but 3 2nd place finishes in the Cy Young in 4 years towards the end, along with playoff heroics and he's fun to debate.

Mussina was a guy who was always better than league average, but never had incredible numbers. Yet he was pretty much a win machine in Baltimore and then NY. Not sure if he's Hall worthy, but could see it either way.

If you don't pick Thomas, give your freaking head a shake

I got Big Hurt, Big Unit, and Chicks Dig the Long Ball as first ballot.

Pete, Biggio, Bagwell, Kent have a chance. (Alomar made it so could these 2B)

Moose and, Schilling, Smoltz don't I think.

Wow, not much Pedro Love.

Agreed. While I would love to see Schilling make it on the first try, I doubt that he will.

Re Pedro, interesting comparisons
If 3000 K gets you in, Schilling is in too.

Pedro has a .687 win % with an ERA under 3. Writer know he played the bulk of his time in the AL East and he should be rewarded. These difference is what makes him first ballot and Schilling 2nd or 3rd.

I realize there's not much love for Biggio, but if they make him wait a couple years, that would be a shame. He played for the Astros and was never in the headlines much, but if 3060 hits and 668 doubles, plus AS nods at more than one position and multiple gold gloves doesn't get him in something is wrong. Most critics claim he was just an average player, but average players are not among the 3000 hit club.

I see five absolute locks on that list, and possibly two more going in on first ballot.

Jeff Kent should be but prob wont....

I thought you guys were stat guys, but only 3others besides me voted for Kent

his stats Blow Away borderline HOFers like Ryne Sandburg (who hit in a bandbox too BTW)

162 game average....
Sandberg.....628 ABs, 21 HRs, 30 2Bs, 79 RBI, .285, .452 slug%
Kent............599 ABs, 27 HRs, 39 2Bs, 107 RBI, .290, .500 slug%

Kent is easily a top 5 Second Baseman ALL TIME
8 X 100+ RBI (6 in a row) (Mantle had 4 in 18 years)
MVP
9 straight years of 34+ 2Bs
9 straight years of 22+ HRs (12 X 20+)
8 straight .500 slug%
.290 career ave.

I did not vote for Kent because I do not think he will be voted in 1st ballot, but as my post mentions, I absolutely think he should be as his stats definitely warrant it.

Thank you for posting those so I didn't have to.

I can't believe less than half of the people who have voted, voted for him. He's absolutely 1st ballot without a shadow of a doubt.
