I bought this Kinsler on ebay tonight. The auction clearly stated that there was a $5.00 charge for shipping and handling and NO insurance. Well, I am the winning bidder at 13.75 before shipping and I click through to the pay screen via paypal. AFTER I've already committed to buying the card, I get slammed with a "Mandatory" $2.00 insurance charge. The insurance stated "None" under "Insurance", but now that I've purchased the item I can't do anything about it. Now I'm paying 20.75 for a card I wanted for 18.75. Is there any way to get my $2 back? Or do I just slam him for shipping charges when they roll around and that's that?

For those saying "All this fuss over two bucks?" A. It could have been more and B. That's more than ten percent of my purchase. You would care if it was cash back on bing, would you not?

I just hate that this cost was hidden from me until I had committed to buying the card and now I'm forced to take a neg if I don't like it and refuse to pay (which I didn't. The card is paid for.)

What gives?

Send him an e-mail saying there are conflicting issues here.. That he said no insurance and now he is charging you for mandatory insurance.

Keep all communication..

If he gives you the run around, leave appropriate feedback to let others know.

Give him a chance to respond first..

Good luck,

simple...just ask him for the $2 refund....don't worry unless he says no, and come back and ask again if he says no.

Just send him a polite message letting him know that the auction said there was no insurance, and that you had to pay it anyways. It could have just been a mistake on his part. He'll probably work it out for you if he's a good seller.

If he doesn't, get your card and then contact eBay. They get pretty pissy when somebody violates their ToS, especially if it's a seller. You should be able to get your $2 back that way.

Wow, that's really lame. Oh well, I sent him a polite message and will wait for a response. I'll post here when I get one.

I thought with eBay's new policy a seller can no longer include insurance as an extra expense. It must be already included in the shipping total. For which $5 will more than cover the shipping and insurance together. If this person gets all crazy on you, you have every right to contact eBay about the insurance part as well as excessive shipping charges if the seller will not include the insurance for the $5 they charged you.

If I'm not mistaken, the new policy on insurance took effect today, 22 Sep. That would mean as of last night, insurance could still be an additional charge. I may be wrong on that, but that was my understanding when I read about the upcoming rule change.

Also, I don't think it's a completely bad thing. I normally purchase insurance on everything I buy, with the exception being very cheap cards (under $5 or so generally). Would I have insured the Kinsler, more than likely. It's a nice card and with the amount of sellers who PWE even nice cards, the protection is worth it.

Really, what's the point of buying insurance? It protects the seller more than the buyer. If your card arrives damaged, all you have to do is file a PayPal dispute and you will win.

Putting your issue aside for a second here.....$7 of shipping costs to ship a 14 dollar card? I don't think so. It will cost him less than 3 dollars to ship that INCLUDING insurance (and I don't know why you would insure a 14 dollar card in the first place).

I'd almost pay the extra two dollars just to be able to slam a big fat neg onto this seller.

A little update..I contacted the seller about this issue and he acted as if he had done no wrong, so I decided to eat the two dollars. Anyway, so the card gets here and it's majorly scratched all over the autograph area and the area where Kinsler's picture is. I asked him for a refund and he said he'd refund 13.75. I politely declined and am filing a claim with paypal. Who needs that card anyways when I can have this from a reputable seller for a few dollars more:

He probably tacked on the insurance since the card was scratched, so that a claim could be filed and money recouped courtesy the USPS.

File for a dispute for the card, neg the guy for not only a damaged card but his absurd twisting/breaking of the eBay insurance rules, and then forward it to ebay's customer service so that they can possibly go after him for screwing with the insurance like that.

I'm sure the guy will do it again with insurance to other people, so it should be brough to ebay's attention.

Oh, I forgot to mention he didn't put insurance on it. It was shipped with DC, but no insurance.

::facepalm::

File claim, neg with low DSR, and report. Just what I would suggest.
