I have had a chance to meet both of my favorite players:

Rod Carew: very friendly and polite, signing tons of stuff at a FREE signing many years ago.

Jim Fregosi: was pretty young when I met him and would love to meet him again, having him sign the photo of our original meeting. Keep hoping he will do a signing somewhere here in Southern California soon.

I already met Andre Ethier and Jeff Francis, and that is why I collect them.
I met Ethier numerous times at the A's AA Midland Rockhounds games in 2005.
He was such a cool guy and loved talking with fans, so I started collecting him since he had numerous cards already out.
It's a bonus he became a great player.
And I met Jeff Francis when his AA team came to Midland, and he was very nice to my wife and me.
So meeting them and finding out what great people they are made me start collecting them.

None of my guys are real superstars or even known by many people so I don't think it would be that wierd, especially because they are no more than 2 years older than me and all went to the U, just before me or are currently there with me.

No interest whatsoever. They're baseball players. I respect them for their ability to play a sport but I honestly couldn't care less about what they'd be like in person.

I believe Will Leitch, the former editor of Deadspin, put it best in explaining why he wouldn't want to meet his favourite player. "He'd probably hate me and I'd probably hate him."

Despite being a young (28), fairly athletic guy, I imagine I'd have virtually nothing in common with most of these guys.

Now, meeting my favourite author or musician? That's a dream......

Yet you collect autos, little pieces of jersey and whatever else of this guy?

Not trying to start anything but that is interesting to me. I thought the point of collecting memorabilia/cards was to preserve memories by getting as close to the game as possible. Actually meeting "your guy" would be the top of the pyramid I would have thought..

I've met Prince Fielder at a signing and it was cool, but not earth shattering.

But I would be thrilled to meet Hank Aaron and get something signed in person by him.
I really hope that happens sometime.

So to answer the question, VERY interested (I save "dreams coming true" for my own accomplishments, not basking in the achievements of others).

I actually think GU cards and memorabilia are ridiculous. I could be wrong but I don't think I own a GU card in my entire collection, other than for a set which is due to completism, rather than collecting. I don't seek out autograph cards, either.

I collect cards because it's a hobby and I love baseball, but I don't care about the players themselves. I mean, I love Roy Halladay as a baseball player. More than any other athlete in my life. But I have no interest in him outside the lines. He could be sitting next to me on the subway and I wouldn't blink.

It'd be awesome to meet Josh Johnson or Bobby Abreu. I don't think I'd have a ton to say, but it'd be a memorable moment in my life, none-the-less.

I've met Boof Bonser, Brendan Harris, Jack Morris, Dan Gladden, Mark Redman and Matt Guerrier (on the Twins Caravan's) and Pat Listach and Doug Henry.

The one who stood out was Harris. My wife loves him because of his looks. I asked how he liked playing in Tampa and if he was a wrestling fan (because Tampa is a hot bed for professional wrestling). He said he worked out with a few of the wrestlers, but didn't watch.

Just little things like that make me a fan. I don't have to have a superstar to be in awe. Just a real person with real interests, like me :D

I don't know about a dream come true because that sounds a little fruity to me, but it would be great to meet Harmon Killebrew and Jeter. The Killer is my favorite old time player and Jeter is a god to me since I have been a Yankee fan since I was seven.

The only guys I really collect are those that I met on a local college summer team, so no real rush to meet any of them again.

Although, I always like to see the players and talk to them when they are in the minors.

(Justin Parker is one exception, he was supposed to play on the team, but was drafted, and I just bought the cards as I got them for cheap, and figured I could get the rainbow possibly. I'm only the Black Status and the Gold Status non auto short.)

To show you how unremarkable meeting Fielder was, I now realize I've met him twice.

But I think if I had the chance to ACTUALLY meet him, like sit and have a conversation that lasted longer than a few sentences, I would have a different opinion of the situation.

I sat with Muhammad Ali for about 5-10 minutes once and it was awesome. Even though he is a tad out of it, it was still really cool to have a chance to "hang out" with such a legend.

I have little interest in meeting complete strangers on the basis of fandom.

That's how I feel. They are just human. I guess I got kind of jaded meeting a lot of Congresspeople and other noteworthy individuals. Then, when I went back and met athletes, they were just regular guys who could hit a baseball. All of my encounters really put athletes in their place, and then I wondered why a certain famous intellectual could treat me well, when some guy who hits a ball with a stick can't even smile or pose with a fan. When you think about it, we really idolize athletes much more than makes sense rationally.

Worse?!?! Didn't know that was possible. I don't think I've been to a baseball-related signing since. I don't think they are worth my time...

At least he didn't go all Latroy Hawkins and start asking you why you are getting the items you have signed. That was a first for me.
