Last night there was a moment when his starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa stared down the home plate umpire after a questionable ball that led to the walk of David Ross.

Right after that there was a blown call at first base by Bob Davidson. This is where a manager has to attempt to deflect some of the hostility on the field on to himself. He should have immediately come out of the dugout and argued the call.

Get the officials mad at him and not his starting pitcher. Walk out, cause a bit of a ruckus, and get yourself ejected for the good of your team. Most good managers would have done that, and its one of a few tricks that Bobby Cox employs.

Bob Melvin hardly ever did for the M's.. It was so annoying to see such blatent calls not get questioned..

That's Gardy's best managerial trick (one of his only). He definitely stands up for his players.

I think Hurdle has hit self-preservation mode and getting ejecting and worrying about the players is no longer on his mind.

He's got one foot out the door already. The players no longer play for him, that is clear.

it's more about the officiating staff than the players in this instance. Umpires are human, and don't like to be shown up. Pitcher gets on his bad side, and the projection of that anger has to go somewhere. As a manager you would rather take it than have it go on your pitcher.

Chris: What kind of call did "Balking" Bob Davidson (Do a Google search) blow at 1B last night? I didn't see the game, but was in Dallas over the weekend when Bob D. was behind the plate and threw John Lackey out 2 pitches into the game for beaning Ian Kinsler. I thought it was a really quick ejection (I later found out the umpires thought there was intent as Kinsler hit 2 Jacks on Friday night). I think it is very interesting how controversy tends to follow certain umpires around the league.

After struggling early and having his avg. dip to .198, Tulo went on a 10 game tear batting .351, w/ 2 HR's, 5 RBI. And during a game in which Tulo has the only RBI, Hurdle decides to bench him for swinging at a slightly high first pitch fastball in an 8-1 game.

Tonight....0-5

Playing on pens and needles isn't easy I guess.

I mean the Rockies are winning, but when every other Rockie is playing well....it makes you think about the effects the benching had on Tulo.

That had to make your day.
