You Atlanta scum stole a perfectly good Milwaukee Braves team away because a new owner bought the team in '62 and started shopping around for a bigger TV deal. So Good! Karma! Word!
At least there's not rumors of your new owners shopping around for wider TV audiences & contracts...

In a couple decades though - how much are TV contracts really going to play into things? With all the satellite tv & mlb ticket packages, I can only imagine that in 20 years, that's just going to be how people watch baseball. The Atlanta Braves Channel, the Kansas City Royals Channel, etc. That's sorta how I see it playing out anyway. Why not?

The Braves can always count on the revenue from all those sold out crowds they play in front of 81 games a year ......

Good.

Maybe the Braves will attack the draft in a different way. They are one the teams that will not pay a player over his slot position.

After the last 2 decades you've had, I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for you

Those two decades were direct benefits of great TV contracts established by Turner. TV revenues were always there for teams but Turner kicked the door wide open with WTBS and literally had a national market to help pay his players. It was a great ride. Interesting that the Cubs had practically the same business model with WGN for all those years and could never translate the extra $$ to wins on the field.

It's ironic that after all of those years the Braves had a competitive edge with those TV contracts and now it appears to be a disadvantage.

I can go to five Gwinnett Braves games for the cost of one Atlanta Braves game, plus there is no pre-game traffic and I am home 13 minutes after the last out (I've timed it). I may never go to another MLB game in Atlanta.

And calling yourselves "America's Team" the whole time Ted Turner owned the team.

Getting screwed by the TV market contract is karma for stealing the Braves from Milwaukee.

TV contracts have been spiraling upwards as teams like the Texas Rangers drive them up. Most teams are able to take advantage of this and cash in big time. Unfortunately my Atlanta Braves will not be one of them as their deals are all in the 25 year (holy crap!) range.

Here is Braves CEO Terry McGuirk on the subject

"Whenever old [TV] deals are up and new deals get realized, there are big jumps in value. I have predicted that, knew it was coming," McGuirk said. "And I think we have an undervalued local rights [deal].

"That being said, we inherited a deal that was done under [previous owner Turner Broadcasting/Time Warner] a little over four years ago, before the sale, that lasts out through 25 years. So there is no opportunity for a different deal than the one we have. Every single set of games on the different networks that we are seen on [Fox Sports South, SportSouth and Peachtree TV] are all 25-year deals or thereabouts."

McGuirk said the deals call for "cost-of-living type increases" each year, but contain no options for renegotiation.

"They were at-market deals when they were done, but the market has changed," he said. "We will have to look elsewhere for the increases that we will need in revenue to continue to build this franchise. It’s what the owners at the time decided to do, so we have to live with it. ... It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it’s not going to be these newer deals where there is cash up front."

Asked if the TV contracts will be a competitive disadvantage for the Braves over the next two decades, McGuirk said: "Let’s just say it won’t be an advantage."

So as other teams get more money and spend more money the Braves are going to stand pat and be a small market team for a long time. It's gonna be a bumpy few decades here in Atlanta.

Or things like Bud Norris at the winter caravan practically begging me to come out to the games this year. Nice sales pitch Bud.

The astros at least realize they are junk right now. But what the hell...I'll still be behind them.

I'm right there with you Pred and David.

Also, I believe this is your shortest post in FCB history :P

You'd think with young talent like Heyward, Freeman, Hanson, Kimbrel, Teheran, Beachy, Delgado, Minor, Vizcaino, Venters, Pastornicky (did I forget anyone?) plus a couple of superstar talents like Chipper and McCann hanging around you might be happy with the direction of your ball club...

Brighter future than the Phillies, Mets, and Marlins.

What happens when it comes time to pay those guys?

AT LEAST YOU HAVE THEM!!! Maybe you should take a good look at the Astos current roster and top prospect list. Then come tell me you have it rough. Spolied, spolied, spoiled

The key difference is that the Braves have been long term contenders. It's one thing to suck all the time, it's quite another to go from contending to sucking. Unfortunately that is where my Braves are heading.
