is it REALLY a "sin" to throw out commons?

my current focus has me ripping wax looking for gem copies of needed Brett's and Schmidt's.

that being said, i have some rack cases sitting here (don't sweat it, im talking 1986 topps to 1990 Donruss) that i intend on opening looking for star power showing on them, and maybe open some if i need the Brett/Schmidt. for those sets that i do not need them, im thinking of just tossing out the racks, and not even bothering with the singles.

i also have some wax to rip (think 1991 Donruss, 1992 Donruss, 1993 Studio and the like) that is cheap, and fun to rip.
Once im done with the rippage, i dont have the room to keep the singles.

i know people say to donate them for a good cause, but these things are decades old. will they really be missed?

You could always offer to give them to someone who sends an SASE. Easy for you, as you just pack the cards into the SASE, and someone else gets the cards that would otherwise end up in the trash.

Is it a sin? No. I actually found a group once that wanted to burn/toss a ton of iconic RCs from the 80s to jack the price up. Personally, I love the novelty of over-production on big name rookies. I dunno why.

Personally, I couldn't do it. I can find a use for them somehow. TTM or donation.

5,000+ in the giant boxes we used to buy at the LCS.

Exactly how I feel. I threw out about 10K cards in the last year.



I'm not going to wasted time trying to list them on sportslots where I'll get $0.20 per card at best after months of having them listed.

Some of those older cases are potentially loaded with obscure variations that could be worth stupid money. The 1990 Donruss case especially; I don't think there's big money in those variations but collectors do go after them. If you don't want to go through them, find a shop or a local collector that might be into that sort of thing. Last summer I threw out a whole mess of early 80' Donruss commons (most were in average condition at best, so they were practically worthless), and I wish I kept them just in case some interesting new variation is discovered. You just never know when something useful can be pulled from a sea of crap.

Thats basically how i look at it, since i only bust wax for the huge hits and dispose of the rest, including watered down numbered cards.

Theres probably some adrian beltre collector trying to get all 100 short prints of the same card and thanks to me that wont be possible.

I used to think so but I've changed my tune. If you have pulled what you want from them, have no one who is willing to take them off your hands in a way that requires a minimum amount of effort on your part, then pitch 'em.

A few years ago, I threw out thousands of early '90s rubbish that was clogging up my closet.
I just put them by the street and wrote free on the mountain of carboard boxes filled with commons.
It was a great stress reliever to purge myself from all that stuff I had hoarded.

It's a busy little community of people that just post and leave stuff by the curb/doorstep. Given away a ton of baby clothes and toys, lots of crap Sega Saturn games, etc.

Not sure of what you're all ripping Eric but some of us player collector do like to have racks/cellos with our guy showing through May want to set those aside and ask before tossing

People also buy them @ $2.00 a thousand...
I sold over 2,000,000 commons of cards from the 80s and 90s (from all sports) about 5 years ago..
and they weren't in 5,000 ct or 3,000 ct boxes, just brown boxes you find at the grocery store...
I had 2 guys that bought them from me...
One guy from tampa would come over and fill his truck with as many as he could fit and when my distributor used to deliver to my house, he would take all the cards I had ready and drive them to a store in Orlando
So put an ad in the classified and on craigslist and you will have buyers...

and if they are current year baseball cards, I may buy them!
