Is there a BC Gold Refractor Auto of a prospect out there that you would buy today as an investment if you knew you had to hold it for 5 years?

With the way the market prices gold refractors of established guys compared to prospects, is there a prospect that you would buy into now at current prices with hopes of making money if you could not move it for 5 years?

Stanton is one that comes to mind.
If I had the cheddar, and could "invest", he'd be my pick.

Stanton is borderline as a prospect for me because he's no longer ROY eligible, but the prices are still pretty high. What does he have to do to increase prices seeing as his gold refractors get 3-4x more than McCann, Youkilis etc. and right around as much as Braun and Hanley.

To everyone, what do you think it would take for your guys gold refractor to be selling for more than they are getting now.

Keep in mind that a guy like Kershaw's gold refractor is selling for far less than it did as a prospect.

It would have to take being the best player, or close to it for most top level prospects. It's only the guys that fly under the radar and then explode in the pros that see theirs sell for more later on.

Hence my Stanton pick.
Since we are talking still being a "top notch" stud, 5 years from now, Stanton is that caliber.

There are zero guys that would justify a 5 year investment, its hard for me seeing anyone that could even justify a 1 year investment.

The opportunity cost is WAY too high.

I agree, Stanton is a good bet to become one of the game''s premier hitters IMO.

not 5 year stable though.

Disagree. The most you can lose on a ******* Gold refractor is the amount you paid for it, like 55 bucks. Because it is so low, you basically have no risk. Nothing says you have to purchase x-dollars worth of gold refractors, or whatever, it's just asking you to hold a gold refractor for five years.

I think you have a much, much better shot of breaking even with *******.

With that said, your best bet is purchasing someone two years into the league and over 24 years old because they're no longer prospects and the buzzzz is gone. Purchasing something after they've dropped is better than purchasing something hoping he'll achieve stardom.

Anyone from 2005-2006 is probably where you want to aim. I'm sure someone like Zimmerman or Kemp, Kershaw, whatever would provide the safest investment w/ the best shot at profit.

Actually you'd have $55 of risk. Go find a player from 5 years ago that didn't make it and look what they're gold refractor autos sell for.

There is no safe or good investment for 5 years, regardless of how much disposable income you have to spend. The safest five year investment is to not buy a gold refractor auto lol

While your statement is factually true, it does not really apply to prospecting

In the prospecting world, $55 is a very low risk investment for a gold ref auto rc of a solid prospect.

And that is also the risk of prospecting/gambling/stock market/housing/etc is that you will lose your money. But people still do it.

I would def say ******* over Borchering at this point however I believe Borchering will be up in Sept and the starting 3B next year.

I would consider Max Kepler. He's toolsy as hell and in five years he'll only be 23. I'm not saying I'd actually do it but he'd be one of the few I'd consider.

Granted you can't get a gold refractor auto of his for $50 so the risk would be a little greater than a guy like *******.

there is very little reason to believe Borchering will be up in Sept, and starting 3B for Arizona next year... he had a so-so year in low-A in 2010... He would have to have a monstrous year and be called up to AA this season to have a shot at starting 3B next year, and he is a high-school player to boot. not good odds

Davidson has a better shot at being up at 3B than Borchering

With Stanton, he might get hot next year, then level back off again in 2-3 years, and be even cheaper in 5 years.

Longer term, even though they are not prospects, I'm going with Upton and Longo, hopefully they will at least hold their values over that time.

Come to think about it, has anyone's gold refractor auto actually sustained an increase in value at the five year point after release, besides Braun, Mauer and Hanley, compared to it's peak level?
