As a Mariner fan and sometimes a Yankee fan when they're in the playoffs I really don't know who got the better end of the deal. Pineda when he was hot was lights out amazing and I saw him in many games over the season... but rumors before the 2011 season where that his elbow would blow out (luckily didn't happen) or that he might not last an entire year, which he didn't actually if you were keeping score on the M's end of last season which I presume most weren't ::facepalm::

However the M's got a great hitter in Montero which they really needed.

I'm indifferent about this trade. Ultimately, I think the Yankees have the edge on this one. Montero, though shows signs of potential greatness, will fall into the category of above average/very good.

What I don't understand is why Yankees fans are getting mad Montero got traded. Could Montero be excellent, sure, but at the same time remember all the people who got gaga on Travis Snider and his .300 plus average in September of 2009 and were touting him as the next big thing. Well, look what happened, he regressed and now some are looking at him as a bust even though he will only be 24 this year. Starting pitchers with the upside of Pineda are hard to find and he had a rookie season that was similar to Clayton Kershaw's first year though Kershaw was 20, Kershaw was the best pitching prospect on the planet then. Pineda could be a RH C.C. if he refines his changeup. All Montero was is a 61 AB sample with 17 K's in those AB's, his BABIP in that short time was over .400, if Seattle thinks they are getting another Miguel Cabera/Albert Pujols they are foolish. Those two are the best two hitters of this generation and first ballot hall of famers, Montero is closer to Billy Butler than those two and Butler is a good but not great player.

Pineda one of my favorites to watch and will be great in NY I think. I enjoyed watching him pitch but now have to root against him. ::facepalm::

Not sure what to think? I feel like the Yankees traded away a monster Yankee Stadium bat!
Watching him last year I thought this is going to suck watching him tear up Red Sox
pitching for the next 15 years! I know pitching is key number 1 in building a championship team
but they made it to the playoffs with nothing and feel like it was their lack of hitting that
prevented them going to the ALCS. They won the best division in Baseball and Jeter and Arod
are a year older. Your telling me Montero couldn't move to 3rd or RF?

I agree. How quickly people forget that Dioner Navarro was going to be a monster for the Yankees too.

Montero is a 20 to 25 runner at best, he is a base clogger. 3rd base is an extremely hard position to play and Montero doesn't have the foot speed to play in any outfield. He is a DH, Yankees made a great trade even if it was Montero/Noesi for Pineda, getting Campos was a coup by Cashman.

the more I think about the better this deal is for the Yankees. Overnight you improved your rotation, your future and just like that your a top 3 team again.

There is a report of a trade in works David Robertson for mark trumbo not sure how i feel about this one

Trumbo could hit 35 HR's a year in Yankees Stadium.

Yea but Drobertson has the makeup to be your future closer honestly a fullseason at Dh andrew jones could put up 20-25 hrs and bat 250 which is close to what Trumbo would/could do. If your not comofrtable with Jones all year sign Damon,Guerrero Kotchman or pena who could all put up similar numbers for around 2 million

I would trade a good hitter for a potential ace pitcher 10 times out of 10..as a Redsox fan it pains me that the Yankees got a potential ace for many years...I understand that Montero is a beast and Pineda broke down towards the end of the year but he is a monster. I am actually looking forward to watching him pitch in Yankee Stadium though because it isn't the pitchers park that Seattle is and he is now in the AL East.

There is no way they trade Robertson, especially for Trumbo.

Rivera is 42 and bound to retire soon. Robertson is a freak of nature and proven in the AL East.
Where does Trumbo play? DH will be tied up with ARod, Jeter, and Russell Martin mostly. They don't need a 1B either obviously. And isn't he injured right now?

PASS.

I love trades like this.

Being a Jays fan I was looking forward to the Yanks going into the season with Sabathia and a bunch of question marks (I'm not nearly sold on Nova) so this is obviously a bit of a blow.

The caution on Pineda, of course, is how will a fly ball pitcher who already gives up a lot of HRs fair in a launching pad? He's gone from a park with a -5% factor for LHB to one with a +43%. That's nuts.

Haha, "rumors that his elbow would blow out". I understand what you're saying just sounds odd.

Near the end of the season, they had Pineda on reduced starts because he was nearing the +30 innings limit from his previous season of about 140. They spaced out his final starts. Also note he really only had the one rough patch in July of three poor starts. Dude threw in 28 games in his first season and only failed to go 6+ IP in 6 of them and even then he never threw less than 4IP. Send that memo to Burnett and Hughes.

YANKEES TAKING A HUGE RISK SIGNING MICHAEL PINEDA. GUY IS NOT YOUNG, HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S 27 YEARS OLD!! AND I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF HE IS. PINEDA WAS BORN IN SAN CRISTOBAL, DR. I HAVE VISITED THAT PART OF THE DOMINICAN TWICE AND WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR YOUNG BALL PLAYERS W/ FAKE/ ALTERED BIRTH CERTIFICATES

I love how many people in this thread are upset and talking trash about Montero or Pineda. Depending on who they have stashes of or what team they're a fan of. Gotta love big trades. Brings out the best in people.

I was totally thinking the same thing. Pineda and Montero are both amazing talents and everyone in this thread hates one and loves the other. It's comical.

you crashed their games too, but in all seriousness I was thinking the same thing when Metallicalex posted his card he looks much older than felix hernandez but the thing I like about him is his size he reminds me of a RJ who though he doesnt get a lot of groundballs he can strike out literally every batter with his stuff. Thsi offseason working with rivera and Rothschild I think he can add a pitch such as the cutter and work on his changeup theres no reason for this kid not to be a star
