$184MM / 8 years.... is $23M a home town discount?

Tough to say. Would he have gotten more on the open market? Possibly, but I'd be hesitant to call any 8 year nearly $200 M deal a discount.

I'm torn.

As a Sox fan, I'm bummed, because I would have liked to have seen them take a run at Mauer. He seems to be a likable guy, and productive at a position the Sox could use.

As a baseball fan, I'm thrilled that a mid-market team ponied up the cash to keep their marquee star.

Overall, I'm leaning towards happy. Definitely happy for you Twins fans.

Glad it's done. One less thing to worry about during the season :P

Good to hear.

I hear he has deity-type status up there and the fans might have revolted if the Twins let him go, especially right after opening a publicly-funded stadium.

Hopefully his personality is enough to put fans in the seats to account for $23 mill/year. The numbers certainly wont be.

Good for the Twins, good for Mauer, good for baseball. Who knows how many of the one team lifers will be left when this contract runs out.

Great move for the Twins. I think it was an essential move on their part, as it'll definitely help bring the fans in to the new stadium.

Since this IS a baseball card forum, though, I have to ask what the general opinion is on how this will affect his card prices. I think that part of the reason his stuff had recently skyrocketed was because of speculation that the Yankees (or another large-market team) would sign him to a long-term deal. My opinion is now that he's a Twin for the next 8 years for sure, I think they'll drop back down to around where they were a few months ago.

His cards were climbing all season long because of his new found "power" and the fact that he missed the first month of the season and came back firing on all cylinders. He had one hell of a season and was hot from the get go. So it got people excited especially when it was clear he was going to be in the MVP running. I honestly don't think him possibly being a FA and going to the Yankees/Red Sox had much of anything to do with his price spikes.

This is the way I was leaning towards as well.

I'm glad that the Twins got this out of the way finally(Better late then never). I just hope that after this year we can still afford to sign Morneau to an extension too. Morneau has expressed in the past that he wants to spend his entire career here with Mauer. Lets see if that happens.

Hope this isn't another Alfonso Soriano..but I doubt it will be. The next few years will tell everyone how well they did with the signing.
