*Phone rings*

Hello?

Hey, Tanner? This is Jose Canseco! How are you?

*Nearly chokes*

======================

If you've been following me for a while, you know that the two things I love most in this hobby are creating custom cards, and collecting Canseco cards.

When the opportunity came where both of these things could intersect, I was beside myself and worked hard to make it happen. Being able to collaborate with my favorite player and create a special set of his cards to become part of the Jose Canseco collecting ecosystem that I love so much — a dream come true!

Shohei Ohtani himself could reach out and it wouldn't be as big to me. Nor Babe Ruth... but then again, I suppose that’d be terrifying if that happened.

It all started when my friend Carlos and I were talking about a year ago. Carlos happens to be close friends with Jose and is the master of setting up autograph sessions. Talks didn’t really go anywhere until about a year later, this past October. That’s when things started gaining traction.

The whole process has been a great learning experience for me. This is really the first time I’ve offered a major “product” like this, and it just happens to be a product that, as a collector, I absolutely love. From teasers, to pre-launch, to actually launching (intentionally yesterday on Jose Canseco Day — 3/3) it was so much fun!

Nerve-wracking? Absolutely.
Terrifying? Definitely.
Worth it? 100%.

Here’s what I first posted...

Then the day prior to launch...

I’m VERY happy to announce this project Jose and I have been working on together:

THE STEROID COLLECTION
A limited series of cards featuring Jose’s autograph and personally worn workout gear.

There are 33 boxes total that will be made, with one slabbed card per box.

Serial number breakdown:
25 copies
5 copies
2 copies
1/1

I decided to go above and beyond with this and do some things card companies don’t typically do. As you can see, the front doesn’t have just a plain square with a relic — the relic itself is designed into the card behind him.

Not only that, the back is foiled up like the front, features a picture of the back of Canseco, AND you can see the relic from the back as well.

The silver holofoil version shown above is the “base” (#/25) card.

Here is the 1/1 with gold holofoil:

And the box? Oooh, I'm excited about the box. Check it out — here is the artwork on the front, back, and inside.

Because I really want this to be a great experience for everyone, I’m sprinkling in a few exclusive SSP minis that will be hidden inside some of the boxes.

Perhaps the coolest thing:
Jose has agreed to do a personalized video shout-out for one lucky buyer who hits the video redemption.

As many of you know, I’ve been creating custom cards for quite a while now. This is my first actual product drop like this. The plan is to do multiple cards in this series and drop them every couple of months with Jose. Some people have already committed to purchasing the entire series.

It was a significantly larger amount of work than the other cards I do, but because I was doing this with Jose, I really wanted to go all out.

Launch day was Jose Canseco Day (March 3rd — 3/3) at 8:33 AM, and 19 of the 33 boxes sold in the first 24 hours! I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but I’m incredibly grateful for how it went.

I was a web developer for about 23 years before going full-time creating cards, but making these boxes available for sale required me to put my web dev hat back on. Let me tell you — I’m happy I’m not doing websites anymore. :)

Speaking of which, here is the shopping cart page I set up for it. If you'd like to grab one of the remaining boxes, they can be had here:

Cool stuff. I like the rear view of the Player on the rear of card idea. Detailed, classy and innovative. Congrats, your customs are great. I ll have a really unique Ted Willians auto this summer for you to do a card with.

"Tanner and I put together...". I am just not seeing jose doing anything other than signing his name and filming a video, but maybe i am wrong. Congrats on the endeavor. Hope it continues to be a success for you.

What are you talking about? We were sitting at Photoshop for HOURS together. Then he printed and cut, I assembled, and we went out for ice cream together! Well ... that would've been cool, anyway. He did have input and such, but of I definitely did the work :)

The ice cream was a nice touch. Lady & the tramp spaghetti sharing would have been more hilarious though.
