I made the mistake of watching 1st and 10 on my lunch break and one of the reporters on there said Josh Beckett was the best pitcher in baseball. He isn't even the best pitcher in his own division let alone all of baseball. Am I the only one who thought that was so far off base?

Here is a list of guys who are better then Beckett in my opinion:

Johan Santana
Tim Lincecum
Roy Halladay
Dan Haren
Chad Billingsley
Jake Peavy
Zach Grienke - at least this season
Felix Hernandez
C.C. Sabathia

That is without even thinking about it. I don't even watch ESPN anymore because they don't live in reality.

King Felix has no business in this discussion, he under performs every year and has not lived up to the hype yet

Felix is also just 23 years old. His ERA and ERA+ have improved through each of his first three full seasons and this year. He's also 45-39 for a team that's been a laughingstock during his time in the majors. He has pitched much better than people realize, and still has the potential to be the best in the game. He gets a bit lost in the shuffle due to his team and unspectacular record. To say he hasn't "lived up the hype" is not looking closely enough.

Thinking that Beckett is the best pitcher in baseball over ANY time period this season is a complete fantasy.

Roy Halladay has been better than anyone all season.

Zack Greinke was better than anyone for the first part of the season so far.

Justin Verlander has been better than anyone since May.

No matter how you slice it, Beckett isn't even on the list. He may be hot, but all three of the guys mentioned above have been better than him all season long and at least two of them (if not all three) have been better than Beckett during his hot streak.

On another note, Josh Beckett is also not the fourth best pitcher in baseball. I would rank him in the late teens or early to mid 20s.

Sorry but that is the fantasy. I'm not going to say he's the best pitcher in baseball, because he's been too inconsistent this year and in his career. BUT he has been the best pitcher the last month or so. The last few starts he's been virtually un-hittable - and that includes the past game vs. the vaunted Yankees offense.

To repost from the 1st page - his last 5 starts

35.2ip, 35k's, 15 hits, 3er

I could be wrong, but I'd like to see who has performed better than that this past month. So he may not be the best, but he has been the past month. Will he keep it up? He could and I hope so, but who knows.

I think Chris Carpenter needs to be in the discussion. He's given up 6 ER in 7 starts. 4-0 1.23 ERA. That being said, Halladay is the best pitcher in baseball...followed by Santana.

Pretty sure Verlander has been better.

Verlander's numbers look like this over his last 9 starts:

65.1 IP, 6-0 record, 8 ER, 1.10 ERA, 81 Ks

Beckett has been good lately, but to me Verlander is more impressive because he's been doing it for nearly twice as many starts as Beckett.

In my opinion he isn't the best starter on the sox, let alone in all of baseball. He has been dominant for stretches, but last year he was just average, and for the first 6 weeks of this season he was terrible. Great pitchers are consistently great. Case and point, Roy Halladay.
Please, do NOT make Beckett seem like an average pitcher because of last year. He was injured the majority of the year and it killed his season. Recently he is the Beckett we all know and love [circa 07, just dominant].

Now I don't think he is the best pitcher in baseball but over his last handful of starts he sure has been. I hope he keeps it up! :)

so what is the excuse for his 2006 season with the 5.01 era in 200+ innings... I will give you last year as an injury year although he made 27 starts... but the last 3 years his era is over 4... that to me is pretty average. The guy strikes out like a beast and has a great offense behind him... as I said though he is not in my top 10 overall... postseason he is nuts

Javier Vazquez last 7 starts:
45.2 ip, 13 er, 5 bb, 55 k

Tim Lincecum last 7 starts:
49.2 ip, 13 er, 14 bb, 53 k

Jered Weaver last 7 starts:
50 ip, 10 er, 15 bb, 46 k

Justin Verlander last 7 starts:
51.1 ip, 7 er, 13 bb, 61 k

Roy Halladay last 7 starts:
51 ip, 10 er, 5 bb, 44 k

Josh Beckett last 7 starts:
47.2 ip, 9 er, 16 bb, 45 k

Looking at that list, I think that Beckett is the SIXTH best starter in that time frame. Out of the six best starting pitchers in that time frame, he has the most walks, 2nd lowest in k's, 2nd lowest in innings and 2nd lowest earned runs.

He may be a great post season pitcher, but he is definitely not the BEST pitcher in the league (right now nor since May 1st OR the start of the season).

It says who is the best pitcher in baseball... not best pitcher for past 7 starts or this month. Just my thought. Maybe a better title would be. who is the 1 pitcher you would start a team with

His last 5 starts were brought up, so I extended it out to 7 games.

Even over the course of the season, Greinke, Halladay, Johan, Vazquez, Haren, Cain, Lincecum and Verlander have pitched better than he has.

If I had to pick, I think Beckett would be somewhere in the teens for me to pick as my #1 starting pitcher (after the 8 already mentioned plus Webb, Roy Oswalt, Chris Carpenter, Chad Billingsley, CC Sabathia, Jered Weaver and Mark Buerhle).

Johan and Hallday. Your right on that. Thats it. Please do not rate guys based on their baseball card value. Cause that's what your list looks like. A complete joke.

How wrong can you be!!!! Lincecum better then Josh Beckett? Umm Beckett is one of the greatest post season pitchers of all time. Wrong there. Dan Haren??? hahaha NO. Peavy??? NO. Felix???? yeaaaaa right. CC??? Nahh Sorry buddy. There are 2 pitchers that are better then him, REGULAR SEASON that is, Johan and Doc Hallday. Thats it. This is one of the funniest posts i have ever seen. You really have not been following baseball since 2003. Cause if you have, you would know how good Josh Beckett is. Tim Lincecum, 2 years is better then a guy that has won 2 World Series and 1 MVP award in the biggest stage??? Felix Hernandez who has never pitched a big game in his life????? Chad Billingsly??? are you on drugs???? Peavy?? When was the last time he pitched a meaningful game???? Greinke??? look at his last 3 starts. Look at Beckett his last 6 Starts. He's back. If he was healthy last year the Sox go to the series and prolly win it. Please do not make posts like this that show your ignorance. hahaha Felix, Lincecum, Billingsly hahahahaahah this is hilarious. That's like saying Tom Glavine was better then Bob Gibson. Hilarious stuff.
How is Josh Beckett better this year than CC Sabathia, Dan Haren, Tim Lincecum, Chad Billingsly, and Zach Grienke? You did not provide stats to prove your points.
