I think the bottom line is that the Rays saw a chance to get out of Kazmir's contract and still get good prospects and took it. They just don't have that much financial flexibility and felt they could spend this money better else where. Rays fans better get used to it because if they can't go too much more than 60-70 million a year then they can't sign all of their good players and others will be next to go like Upton.

I would love to see Upton be the next to go!!!

You go!

At least we both like the Cowboys!

Rays Front Office Management for 09: D

The list:

Trading Kazmir when his value is at a all time low: D
Not getting anything worthwhile in the Kazmir trade: F
The Edwin Kackson trade: D
Letting Trever Miller go: F
Signing Pat Burrell to early during the FA season: D
2009 MLB Draft: C+
Jason Hammel Trade: A ( Only because they keep Jeff)
Pick up of Greg Zaun: C

Twins way of doing things works because they are smart. You dont take players you cant sign in the draft when you are a team that is going to have to cycle players in order to be competitive thu the system. Washinton told the Rays he was wanting 3.2 million to sign the day after his workout according to other sources then his dad. Rays should have wait until the offseason and then take the best prospect deal with Kazmir.

This isn't the all-time low for Kaz's value, as he's pitched well lately and teams that believe in him get him for the playoff push. His all-time low would have been earlier this year. If they wait he could start sucking again or just get injured again. Plus his salary goes up next season. How was letting go of Trevor Miller an F? He was an aging lefty specialist who posted a 4+ ERA. I also don't buy that Washington wanted 3.2 mil., that was like slot for #2 or #3 overall.

Haven't been on all day so I will start with:

YES!!! I'm stoked about the addition of Kazmir.

However, their is a player to be named later in the trade. Since it is a PTBNL, it is most likely a player on the DL, or on the 40 man. Rex Hudler (Angels Broadcaster) said that Kazmir was aquired for 3 minor leaguers. Therefore, I am pretty confident that the PTBNL is Jordan Walden

If that is true then the rays got a great deal.

Talked to Conger earlier. He's pissed that Sweeney got dealt.

Great deal for the Angels

Jordan Walden was their top pitching prospect entering the season, so I doubt the Angels would just throw him in.

The PTBNL is probably someone like Terry Evans at AAA or a 'no-name' pitcher in the low-minors.

Scott Kazmir was the Rays best pitcher entering the season ;)

PTBNL are normally not throw ins, they are players who would be included in the deal, but were unable to be traded at that time (less then 1 year after being drafted, DL, etc...) Terry Evans would clear waivers, so it wouldn't be him who was traded. Madden made comments on the 3rd player, so he already knows who it is. His comment after the game regarding who the Rays were getting in return. "We're very excited about the player that we can't name yet, but also about the other two," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "The lefty has a great arm, and Sweeney is one of the best hitters in the minors." Walden is on the DL, so he is unable to be traded at the moment.

A. You don't think the Rays could have atleast gotten a Joe Blanton like package if they would have just waited until the offseason ? The A's got second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.Blanton was 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA and the only thing that has stopped Kazmir from achieving that ERA is the lack of innings this year.

B. Miller has pitched 35.1 innings of ball this year with a 1.78 ERA with 4 wins and 11 holds. Miller has given up a run in only five of 52 outings this year. 1 in the last 32. The Rays paid him to go away. Other then JP Howell and Dan Wheeler, show me someone in the Rays bullpen worth a roster spot this year. The bullpen has blown 17 saves.

C. It took 2 million dollars to sign Slade Heathcott 2.2 million from his LSU scholly. Sources say that Washington was wanting around 3 million to ignore his Florida scholly which isn't that hard to believe considering he was a Boras client.

I agreed with most of your grades, but I think the Zaun trade deserves more than a C. He has really helped the pitching staff.

As with Washington, he's an idiot for not signing. Last I heard he won't even be eligible to play at UF next year.

In the craziest thing, one of the two prospects the Rays acquired are injured and they do this in the middle of a wild card race.

Sweeney missed most of the past two months with a chipped hip bone, and lost all of last season to ligament damage and bone chips in his ankle.

I would not be all surprised if the Angels use Kazmit has a emergency starter next year and a full time setup man next year. The Rays always flirted with the idea.

Chances are the player to be named is Reggie Willits.

Kazmir won't be moved to the 'Pen unless he is terrible this season and next season. If Reggie Willits is the PTBNL, I will be stoked! Willits is one of my favorite players, but there is no room for him on the Angels, and I would love to see him getting MLB playing time elsewhere.

Why would the Rays want Reggie Willits. They have enough utility players as it is.

Well, Maddon has never hid the fact that he likes Reggie.

The Rays were interested in Angel Castillo and Alexia Amarista the 1st time the two teams were discussing Kazmir.

There is no chance Washington expected to get $3+ million and an even lesser chance the Rays would have drafted him if he made those demands.

Why do you think they took Washington and Kenny Diekroeger ? because the Rays knew theyt wouldn't be able to sign them . Why Todd Glaesmann, Jeff Malm, and Derek Dennis ? All high risk guys that did not hide the the fact they were going to have to be bought out of their scholly. Rays roll the dice and won with getting two of the six without looking like the Mets.

Derek Dennis told his local newspaper that he had no idea why the Rays even drafted him because he made it clear to everyone that if he wasn't taken within the 1st 2 rounds he was attending Michigan.

ANAHEIM -- A proposed trade that would have sent Rays left-hander Scott Kazmir to the Angels for a pair of prospects has fallen through.

Multiple reports had the Angels set to acquire Kazmir in a move aimed to bolster their beleaguered starting rotation.

The Rays were to get pitcher Alexander Torres and third baseman Matthew Sweeney in return.

Kazmir is 8-7 this season with a 5.92 ERA in 20 starts for the Rays.

Before the Angels' game against the Athletics on Friday night, manager Mike Scioscia said: "There's a lot of speculation out there but there's nothing really to talk about. We don't talk about specific players. There's nothing imminent."
