Getting all 5 1/1's is tough, I've been searching for 2 of the Kevin Van Dam ones for 2 years now. I think Jason still needs a few.

If you include the Topps blank back card, then there are actually 6 1/1's.

Has anyone ever completed a run of Allen & Ginter cards?

I have everything of Loren Opstedahl, the champion sheep shearer, except the cyan printing plate. That plate is tucked away in another collector's PC.

Keith

I have all but the yellow plate from 2006, which I have never seen. From 2007 I'm missing three plates, one of which is locked away in another's collection. Moreso than with other sets, I think Allen & Ginter actually affords a chance at collecting all of a player's cards, as so much of the product is broken on a yearly basis.

That's dumb.If I had a plate of your player...as long as I was sent another plate of a player I do collect...I'd let go of it sure enough.Hopefully one of you at least gets that chance.I mean...its not hard to hop on ebay and snag another plate of a random player.

He has a collection of one plate for each Tampa player in A&G, spanning several years. I might try to get all four some year to use them as leverege, or just wait and see if he ever decides to sell.

It's one of two 1/1s that I have missed on eBay and not later gained posession of.

It's the other 10% that hurts. I had a few over the years that stand out:

At a Willow Grove, PA show in the late 70's I had the chance to buy either a 51 Bowman Mantle or Mays for $100 each, near mint smokers. I passed on both.

Then at the AC National in the late 80's there was a table with two large bins in front of it. One was filled with Star Co Roger Clemens sets, the other with 86-87 Fleer Basketball sets with the stickers. Both items were $6 each, and there were dozens of each. I'll never forget, the Fleer sets were wrapped in siran wrap, lol.

I bought all the Clemens sets.

I think that's the one set that really hurts for many of us collecting then. Basketball was just an afterthought at that time in collecting. I wish I would have snagged all I saw as well.

I traded my 86-87 Fleer basketball to a dealer for plastic sheets for my baseball cards(that 86 Topps set will be kept mint). Nobody wanted the 86-87 Fleer basketball at the time. The same with 1984 USFL sets. you couldn't give them away.

Yeah, I really do not understand why the collector that has the Opstedahl cyan plate that I need is so interested in holding onto it. It sounds like he has a pretty good collection of printing plates, so the Opstedahl plate is probably just sitting in one of his boxes and never sees the light of day. If the situation was reversed and he needed that plate to finish a collection then I would just give it to him. He has the plate though, so I guess that he can do whatever he wants with it.

It is kind of frustrating because I REALLY wanted to get all of Opstedahl's cards.

Guy sounds like a ********* if he wont cough up the sheepshearer, that sucks. Good luck Keith maybe his butt will loosen up lol.

I wish I knew where the Kevin Van Dam (yea, the bass fisherman) wood & yellow printing plate were, I'd beg for them. I got the other 3 printing plates pretty easily, thought it would be easy.

I don't consider the Topps Vault blankbacks "real" cards, they werte never packed out & just made to get cash on Ebay, must be nice to print money...

Ginter is such a popular product, so much of it is ripped that you all actually get a decent shot at these
plate sets. I think where some people go wrong is that they make too much of a big deal out of needing
those cards, especially when they get close. I don't need to tell anyone that if someone knows they
are holding the last missing piece of an amazing 1/1 set, that in their mind the price just went up. We
can all say that we would do the right thing and sell the card to the collector. I had a guy contact
me about a Hafner plate that I had, I didn't think twice about selling it to him after I saw that he
was a big collector I would rather have those kinds of cards in a player collectors box than mine, but
not everyone thinks that way, especially when you may have spent a lot of money buying wax and need
to recoup some money. I bust a lot of wax, especially ginter, when I pull a plate or a rip card, it is usually
worth more to me than anyone else, sometimes more than a person who is putting together a plate
set thinks its worth. I can see helping out player collectors, but I can also see maximizing your ROI and
in this case it is buying wax. The best thing to do is not draw attention to yourself if you are putting these
kinds of sets together, once you have the 4 plates you can talk all you want.

I hope you finally get your card, but this is a lesson learned for all of us.

Sheepshearer71, it is truly disappointing when a rare card ends up in the hands of someone who may not appreciate it to the same degree as you would. I've been there, and it's a helpless feeling. However, it happens and you just have to just hope that you get a crack at said card down the road. I'm still waiting for that opportunity to present itself for one of the white whales in my sig, and I hope you get a shot at the Opstedahl plate as well. Good luck!

I don't think what it costed me is important, I'm just glad to announce that I've aquired the card (or will in a few hours) & it'll be on its way to Jason in the morning. I just talked to him & he is thrilled to be getting it. So happy ending for all parties involved. The whole thing has been a positive experience for me, no regrets whatsoever. Jason's promised me a pic of him holding the card and that, my friends, is priceless.

Happy collecting!

Jason has volunteered to break any codes I might encounter in the future free of charge. I asked him to help me figure out my wife, but he said no man could do such a thing

Nice card. Were those only inserted into the rip cards?

I've never had one of those in hand, but wouldn't those be easy to deciper in the rip packs?A local dealer told me he saw a guy pull a Mantle of 10 sell for the same amount.

Well Jason made the trip up to my shop yesterday from Baltimore. It was great meeting him & his buddy Mike. Turns out Jason & I have much in common. I actually had a few fans there waiting for him. He signed a few autographs & took a few pictures, including one of he & I with the infamous wood 1/1. Jason had planned to spend about an hour...well I had to kick him out after over 3 hours of talking & laughing. We told many fish stories, turns out Jason's a bassman like myself. We talked about the Ginter Code & how he solved it. & how cool is this? Jason bought a sweet Mickey Mantle cardnfor his collection. We've kept in touch since I got him the 1/1, and now I can say that we've become true friends.

Will post a few pics here soon.
