I would consider not having the sticker auto as part of the same insert set as the on-card, so that those who will not touch sticker cards will not be deterred from building the set. I believe that in most cases the name sells the card, especially if it is an elusive player. It would definitely be better if the card design is nice. Game-used as is illustrated by other posts is something that some go for and some do not. I imagine a nice patch auto would be highly in demand, though it may not be everyone's thing. I remember a couple of years ago Donruss Elite had Pujols auto's. IMO the cards were not great looking, and they had stickers, but they were very limited, and for a time seemed to be a major player in sales of the product.

what if we made up for stickers by adding jumbo oversized swatches/patches to many of the autos?

It would help, but what if you sent oversized game used swatches to be autographed with a high quality fabric pen instead?

In pretend land, this player is unwilling to sign small swatches to to difficulty in handling...
Its stickers or bust... But, in this land of make believe, he's HUGE!...

It would be a 12 card set called "__________ __________ Collection".
These would be completely unique from the products in which they are inserted.
Cards #1-6 would be available in Metal BB Draft and cards #7-12 would be in product #2.
About 1/2 of the cards would be Jumbo Game Used, the other half just autos...
Thoughts?

Pull the trigger and make a nice design that incorporates the sticker.

Clearly Leaf understands the importance of on card autos, but there is no way you can have 100% of your autos on card.

Is the player McGwire?

What sort of print run? Is this a player you can picture people trying to put together a set of? If there some sort of significance to the variations, or is it simply to limit print run? (Just some questions that may be worth considering.)

I get that; it sounds like you already feel you know what you've got to do.

It wouldn't take too much effort to adhere pieces of jersey to acid free backing with archival safe glue to ready them for signing. Hell, you could even do 8x10 sheets like that, draw a grid on them, have the player sign each of the gridded off swatches, and cut them later. That would make them much easier to sign.

edited to add:

This isn't me trying to be obstinate; its me giving truly constructive advice because I like the products you've been putting out as of late.

Most of the time signed fabric looks like crap.

You can never make everyone happy all the time. No matter what you do someone will always find a reason to whine about it. Obviously the effort is there to give the consumers ( us) what they want, and I applaud the effort.

I honestly agree with those talking about the "trapped" signature cards like spx used to have. Just grid of pieces of quality paper and have the player sign the grids. I just don't like the fact that cards is the ONLY place you will ever find a sticker autograph. I've never seen someone at a ball game asking a player to sign a piece of tape so they can affix said autograph to whatever they want. However I do see many people having 3X5s, notebooks, and other pieces of just plain paper items being signed. I do like when a card is designed with a sticker autograph in mind and it is made to the best of the ability of the company to "blend" the sticker into the card. But as I said before I really really like the trapped paper cut sigs best...

Just my 7 cents...

Both.... the player is big enough that lots of people will want all and yes, it will help to keep runs extra tiny.

I prefer the trapped autographs to most sticker autographs.
Sure they're technically similar, but trapped signatures, like the old UD SPx and 2002-2005 USA Olympic autographs look great.

Very cool. I am sure you know this, but a print run that is too low will keep people form pursuing the set, (I imagine under /25 would limit how many collect, and if it is a really tough player, even at that amount the $$ amount may be too high for many people.) I've also seen collectors who were not thrilled with what they felt was an artificial scarcity since there are numerous versions, though if the set has a compelling theme, and the cards are somewhat different from each other, that should be taken care of.

Good luck with it! I loved the Leaf Ali set and wish you luck on the next offering.

The part above in bold is important in my opinion. While I don't put sets together, I don't believe I've ever seen a single set, which has the same design for all cards, be able to pull off both on-card and sticker autos. I think the cards have to be designed a particular way for each type of autograph. In all the cases I can recall, the sticker autos, in non-sticker designed cards, are eyesores. That being said, while the product may take some criticism for this sort of thing, I don't think it will have a huge impact on product sales.
