For those that don't know, "Dummy" was a nickname given to a lot of of deaf people because the public assumed their inability to speak meant they lacked intelligence. There are no less than 7 former major leaguers that went by Dummy.
Anecdote: My Grandad knew Dummy Taylor since they both lived in Jacksonville, Il; Dummy Taylor used to cuss out umpires with sign language. An umpire responded in sign language that he understood it, and he was ejected.
If we start to get into all the mental disorders (ADHD, anxiety, etc.), this list could get huge I'm sure. I'm fine with that and recognize that it's still a very big obstacle for some to overcome , although that's not necessarily the disabilities I was thinking of. Still I'm amazed at how many guys there were that overcame some incredible obstacles to excel at baseball. Thanks for all the contributions.
Josias Manzanillo lost one of his nuts to a comebacker and still pitched (heck he even still threw the guy out at first base!) After surgery, Manzanillo returned, but not for long. ... "My confidence was tough because I was trying to protect myself before I threw the ball." :shock:
