I don't know how any owner would ever give Ramirez any more than a one year contract. The guy is a headache year in and year out. No bat is worth that. The Dodgers can take that $20 some million a year and get two very good players without the head problems.

They said on ESPN that perhaps he wants 2/50. Maybe he questions why his 2nd year pay would go down if he accepts the option. Makes sense, but I think 2/50 is as good as it will get for Manny right now.

cmon, 2/45 isn't enough? What's the real difference?

Not that I am defending Manny, but there were some terms that were released towards the end of the day yesterday. Apparently, a portion of the $45 million would be paid out over a 5 year term. Manny wants it to be paid out over two. I can't really blame him for that. The Dodgers are looking for a 5 year, interest free loan from a player.

I think Manny just doesn't want to have to go to Spring Training.

But I think he deserves to be blackballed.

As much as I dislike him holding out for more money, I don't hold it against him one bit turning down those terms. Both sides are starting to look foolish.

I hope the Dodgers will tell him to pound sand. Even if the Dodgers end up signing him, will Manny be truely happy with all the negotiations.

Manny has every right to turn down that crap offer. Everyone likes to bash on the players for turning down millions when its the owners who are swimming in billions. The owners of baseball teams are some of the richest people in the US and sometimes the world so why should we get on Manny because he wants to be paid what he is worth?

Because it's ONLY BASEBALL! He's far from solving the world's economic troubles or creating everlasting world peace.

If Manny wants to earn more, then he should own a team. At $25 million a year, he would get paid almost as much for two games as the President of the US (past or present).

I'm all for a player trying to get paid as much as they can but it gets to a point (such as this) where it's pathetic and makes the player look like an ass.

I don't think Manny or Boras are jerk. I just don't see where they think they are going to get more money. I just think they look like idiots.

I'm thinking they will hold out until someone important gets hurt and it's Manny to the rescue.

That's the way the world works. As long as people are willing to pay increased ticket prices to see the games and advertisers are willing to pay ridiculous money for ads, the players are IN THE RIGHT to demand the money they make. I would MUCH rather they get the increases than the owners who do nothing.

I can't agree with that. I grew up with an owner that always reinvested in his team. I remember when he first purchased the Yankees in the 70's and people thought he was nuts.

The players can demand all they want. If the owners don't pay, then the players simply don't play. Again, I take no issue with a player trying to earn as much as possible. I do, however, take issue with someone like Manny rejecting these offers in this day and age. The offers can't all be one sided in favor of the player or owner. There has to be some middle ground to agree on and it doesn't appear Manny/Boras wants to meet in the middle.

Owner - Willing to pay Manny the money he wants but spread over time
Manny - Wants money paid now (essentially).

When you're talking about this kind of money, the owner's offer is not out of the ordinary. It's the way business gets done in this world.

I agree. I think the problem lies not with the players demands though, as much as it does with the fans. Ticket prices continue to skyrocket and people continue to pay to go see the games. As long as this trend continues, players of any sport will continue to ask for raises, regardless of the current economic climate.
