Not even about #s! McGwire is a tremendous hitter. He could square up a ball like no other. Would love to have him as my teams hitting coach. He learned from the best, and will be one of the best. Now when will someone wake up and hire Greg Maddux as a pitching coach. There is untold knowledge in that guy!

Don Tony has been trying to get Big Mac to be his hitting coach since he retired. Great move in my opinion. Will be fantastic seeing the big ginger 25 back in the dugout.

Mcgwire may not have had a high career average, but he could hit. No one can deny that. He may have used roids, none of us know the truth. He could still hit the ball 500 feet as a rookie, and in college. I serioulsy doubt he was taking anything illegal then.

I think it is a great thing. I think once he gets back into baseball, and everyone sees how comfertable he is in a uniform again, the HOF voters will be better towards him.

Damn, I didn't know it was a requirement to have a career .300+ avg to be a good coach. I don't think MLB owners know that either. Send that memo on so they can fire all of their ****** coaches that never hit that number.

While they are at it they should fire all their pitching coaches that didn't average 18+ wins a season, all the managers that didn't join the 40/40 club and owners that aren't the top .05% richest men in the world.

LaRussa was a terrible MLB player from everything I've heard.

Sparky Anderson, Whitey Herzog, Tommy Lasorda--heck, even Tom Kelly were all subpar ballplayers but were World Series winning managers. Look at some of the best managers around today, and few of them were All-Star caliber players. Therre are guys like Torre, Sciocia, Guillen who come to mind as being better than average as players, but overall, guys like Gardenhire, LaRussa, Girardi, etc. make up the majority of the managerial pool.

Definitely true! Same goes for hitting coaches too. Just speaking on the knowledge of the team I follow, Yankees hitting coach, Kevin Long was a career .273 hitter WHO NEVER MADE IT PAST AAA! He's been with the Yanks for three seasons now and does an admirable job. Guys like A-Rod have praised him multiple times for their hitting success. Alex even going as far as calling him "The best kept secret in baseball."

Just because you weren't a great hitter or player doesn't mean you will make a lousy coach. And conversely, great hitters or players will not always make great coaches.

I'm kind of excited/interested to see Big Mac back in baseball. I never had any beef with him. Always seemed like a class act. It'll be interesting to see if he still pleads the 5th. My opinion: if he did take steroids, the first thing he has to do is confess about it and get it out of the way. I think he'll be forgiven by most if he does.

Press conference on FSN right now with TLR about him coming back and Big Mac. Mac not there. TLR, DeWitt and Moz are.

Yup! Some people just don't differentiate coaching from playing. Just because you are a good player does not mean you will be a good coach and visa versa. I wonder if the media is going to put a positive/negative spin on this as soon as they see him in uniform.

The media were asking a ton of questions about him, and Moz said jokingly that he didn't know it it WAS a good idea bringing him back judging by all the questions that have been directed at them already. But like TLR is saying right now, since, he said, 1992 things Mac has said and done have impressed him immensley in reguards to his approach to hitting. And it helps that Mac already has deep relationships with Mozeliak, him, Dunc, the organization and great relationships with several of the players on the team. But like a writer asked, it will initially be a distraction on the road, and even in STL. But Dewitt said it was a standard coaching contract, and he won't be treated any differently than any other coach on the staff. I think it is a good move. Not only for the Cardinals, but for getting McGwire out in front of the public again and not being a recluse.

Yeah, consider Ted Williams.

The best players have so many tools, including natural ability others don't have. You can't teach natural ability.

Exactly!

Another dimension of this that has been in the back of my mind is if this is going to help or hurt baseball coping with the steroid era.

Whether he did/didn't do it aside, he's lumped in this era and is more or less one of the poster children of the tainted time. I'm curious if his success/failure will allow fans and critics to forgive people of this time period and move on from the pointless witch hunting they are wasting so much time/money on.

im happy. my favorite player is back wearing a uniform. But im fooling myself if i think it wont create some kind of circus atmosphere when he first shows himself with the team. on the other hand i am extremely excited that the cards come to philly in may. Im gonna go to all 4 games and im gonna bring my 98' mac gamer and try to get him to sign it. Im even gonna try to hit up some spring training games. It's gonna definately be an interesting spring training. And i can't wait
