The hottest MLB players over the last seven days:
1. Hanley Ramirez -- 10 hits 7R 3HR 13RBI 2SB .435 -- Hanley's two grand slams and 13 RBI's (all during a four game span) cemented him atop the list. His .429 batting average with runners in scoring position leads the majors.
2. Albert Pujols -- 9 hits 5R 3HR 12RBI .360 -- Its safe to reserve a spot for Pujols on this list week in and week out, but Monday he outdid himself going deep twice and driving in six runs. Pujols failed to record a hit in only one game this week; a game where he went 0-2 with two walks.
3. Justin Upton -- 10 hits 7R 2HR 6RBI .435 -- Upon is carrying an eight-game hitting streak into today and his .993 OPS is third highest in the majors. Get used to this All-Star caliber production.
4. Troy Tulowitzki -- 9 hits 8R 3HR 5RBI .474 -- A two home run show on Tuesday helped put Tulo on the Sheet. His 12 home runs are the most among short stops and he's already topped his home run total from last season. Tulowitzki looks like he's regaining his 2007 form where he hit 24 homers and drove in 99 runs.
5. Miguel Cabrera -- 11 hits 7R 3HR 5RBI .458 -- His production reminds me a lot of Pujols' to the point where he often gets overlooked. Cabrera's .335 average is second in the AL to Ichiro.
6. Chris Carpenter -- 14.2IP 1W 11K 2.45ERA 0.61WHIP -- Carpenter's single and a walk against Johan Santana landed him on the list. That, and his sub-2.00 ERA on the season plus the fact that he's returned from injury looking sharper than ever.
7. Fernando Nieve -- 12IP 2W 9K 0.75ERA 1.08WHIP -- The Mets looked to Nieve to fill the rotation gap after loosing Oliver Perez and John Maine; the club can't be disappointed in his effort. His totals for the week came against good hitting teams (Tampa Bay and St. Louis) but he only managed six innings in each start, needing over 100 pitches in each start.
8. Tim Lincecum -- 9IP 1H 12K 1.00ERA 1.00WHIP -- Lincecum held the A's to a solo home run, striking out 12 and walking two in a complete game. In 105IP, Timmy has recorded 124 outs via the strike out.
9. Cody Ross -- 11 hits 4R 3HR 6RBI .478 -- Ross is a hot/cold type player, but he's right in the middle of the Marlins offense. He has 13 homers already and should easily surpass his 2008 total of 22.
10. Josh Beckett -- 9IP 1W 7K 0.00ERA 0.56WHIP -- Beckett allowed just five hits in his first complete game shutout since joining the Bo Sox. It only took him 94 pitches to go the distance.
Worth Mentioning:
Derrek Lee had put together a 21-game hitting streak before going 0-4 yesterday. Ricky Nolasco looks to have rebounded after being sent down to the minors to work out...whatever was causing his 9.+ ERA. In his last start against the Orioles, his two runs allowed were unearned. I don't know how this works, but Andy Sonnanstine posted 12K's in 11.1IP but also allowed eight earned runs in two starts this week. The Mariners are bad: Ichiro went 15-27 (the most hits this week) but only scored five runs. He's the first major leaguer to 100 hits despite sitting out eight games to start the season. It must be getting warmer at US Cellular: Paul Konerko went yard four times.
