MLB announced today that the top reliever in the AL will be the "Mariano Rivera AL Reliever of the Year" and the top NL guy will be the "Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year".

Better than the Rolaids Relief Man?

Meh, I suppose. It's not corporately sponsored anymore, so there's that. I'd rather it just be "AL" and "NL" Reliever of the Year.

I like the Rolaids relief, but also like that they are named after people. MVP is Kennesaw Mountain Landis, of course Cy Young.

It's cool that they recognized Hoffman and not just called it the Mariano Rivera AL and NL awards.
But I'm not a fan of awards named after players.

If you read, the awards will be voted on by Rivera, Hoffman, Billy Wagner and a couple of others.

The biggest complaint right now is that setup guys probably wont win the awards, just closers.

I'm okay with those two, but what happens when you have a guy reach 700 or 750 saves in a career? Do you remove Mo or Trevor from the future trophy names or...?

It's like if MLB had a Home Run trophy - no brainer to call it the Babe Ruth Home Run Champ trophy, but nowdays would it be named after Hank Aaron or Barry Bonds?

Corporate naming is not as nice as personifying the trophy name, but it's easier to remove or change the corporate name and get the public to accept it -- just imagine if someone in the AL smashes Mo's saves total and the AL trophy is renamed and Yankees fans riot! ;)

I can C the saves record being broken. Consider now rookie can be closer to start a career unlike both Rivera & Hoffman took them couple years in major before they become the man. Braves Kimbrel is on pace to break the record.
