Coming into 1995, the baseball card market was dead because of the going strike.

Once settled, mlb and their licensed card companies combined to make a single product. This was something never done before.

"National Packtime" was an 18 card set with each licensed company making 3 cards.

For 28 wrappers and $2, collectors could send them in for the set.

Depending on your personal thoughts, this set could boast as many as nine hall of famers, half the set.

Despite this, the set never took off in value.

Anyone here remember doing this promotion? I know I did.

Still have the complete set:

Plus this additional six-card set, with some odd numbering:

Maddux is numbered "1 of 6", Daulton is unnumbered, Johnson is "3 of 6", Nomo is "3 of 5" Mattingly is "2 of 6" and Belle is "1/8".

All have the National Packtime logo on front.

Mailed off for numerous sets at the time, as with any other mail in deals I was aware of. I have a real sob story about the jumbo Arod wrapper redemption auto from 94 UD too…maybe another time.

I think the only thing I miss more than mail-in deals is food issues. If there were cards included, I'd buy it. That included convincing my dad to fill up the car's gas tank only at stations that gave away cards!

I sent in for a few of these sets. I miss the hostess baseballs with the cards, or the ones in Post cereal.

There were some great ones. Big League Chew, Jimmy Dean, Nabisco, Canadian Club Whiskey and other food/drink mail-ins for HOF autos around $5 ea. I was getting a slurpee weekly at a minimum for those 3D coins in the 80s at 7-11. Mac & Cheese cards, peanut butter, Pepsi and I could go on and on. Love that stuff.
