It appears to be that the etching is colored.
The first thing I thought of was the TVs that came out with colored ambient light. That's the comparison I made.So the etching, which has been on Topps Refractor cards as far back as... 93? I know it as on 95 Bowman's Best... In any event... the groundbreaking technology was to, 20 years later, color in the etching?

Call me crazy, but when I see a football or baseball card, I typically like to see a ballpark or batting cage or something sports-y as a background.
Every single one in your signature has background.I'm not calling you crazy, but TONS of cards have no/little background behind a player nowadays.
