First off,

Hey, nice to meet ya'll, I'm Joe!

I've been lurking on the forums for quite a while now and have decided to register to get in on the fun. I haven't really collected cards since my youth (88-94ish) and I'm a little out of touch with how things have changed. I'm a big fan of the certified on-card autos, but all of the other patches and parallels just don't do it for me. I've been looking around for a set to attempt to complete, something that isn't easy or outrageously expensive. I've decided on 1956 Topps in a psa 6. I'm still at the very beginning stages and was hoping I could get some advice on a few things.

1) Would it be better to buy pregraded or try to send in a few myself. By no means am I an expert on the different grades so I'm afraid I'll end up with alot of psa 5's that I would have to replace.

2) Where would be the best place to buy from, casually. Right now I've been using the Bay, but any other advice would be appreciated.

3) Storage: Right now I'm just using an oversized version of the classic white cardboard boxes. This seems fine but just how durable are these psa cases.

4) Is there anything I should be concerned with or watch out for?

In short I wanted to say hi, and get some opinions.

Thanks and take care.

- In the long run it will be cheaper to buy already graded because you will find some commons cheaper graded than they would be if you bought them raw and had them graded yourself. Though it you want to try grading get a good number of them already graded so you can get a good idea of what the particular grade your going after looks like!

2) Where would be the best place to buy from, casually. Right now I've been using the Bay, but any other advice would be appreciated.

Ebay is the primary place for graded materials, but also try forums like net54, which is mainly a pre-war vintage site, but there are a number of folks over there that dabble in a lot, plus the amount of knowledge over there is amazing!

3) Storage: Right now I'm just using an oversized version of the classic white cardboard boxes. This seems fine but just how durable are these psa cases.

You might look for a box made by RJ Loop, plus there are other companies that make cases. There is the 2 peice shoebox that a lot of people use, it really comes down to personal prefrence. The cases themselves are pretty sturdy, but all of my graded cards are in graded sleeves to keep the cases from scratching!

4) Is there anything I should be concerned with or watch out for?

Try to learn what the reprints and fakes look like for this set.

In short I wanted to say hi, and get some opinions.

Mainly, Welcome to the boards!!

Thanks and take care.

yeah, you should probably buy all of them already graded, because like darren said it'll cost twice as much to get the commons graded than what you paid for it and you never know what grade it might get. Also, you wouldn't want to take any chances with a card being altered or trimmed, so it's probably best to just buy every card graded.

Believe me though its really expensive either way. :D However, I concure with what everyone else is saying, buy graded cards. It saves you a lot of heartache in the long run!

The biggest addition was a JACKIE JENSEN card. I am quickly finding out that the second series is really hard to find in high grade.

You will find them, just have to be patient! I just finished my relic set, got the last 9 cards in less than a month, and couldn't believe it!
