New Kansas City Royals First Baseman Mike Jacobs has now hit 4 Home Runs in Spring Training, behind only Craig Monroe (6) and Ryan Howard (5). Jacobs came to the Royals this offseason as the Marlins didn't want to pony up the arbitration dollars Jacobs was going to get. With 32 HR and 93 RBIs with the Marlins last year (and a $395,000 salary), Jacobs avoided arbitration by coming to an agreement with the Royals for one year and $3.275 million.

While looking at Jacobs' stats last year, I noticed that even though his slugging was .514, his OBP was a paltry .299. I thought it odd that someone would have a slugging over .500 but an OBP under .300, so I looked it up.

In seasons where a player qualified for a batting title (usually 502 plate appearances), only 3 times has a player had a .500 slugging percentage and an OBP under .300. Here they are: http://www.bb-ref.com/pi/shareit/tuHR

I wish Jacobs the best, but he needs to get on base a little more often to make the Royals better.

In spring training sometimes hitters are better then pitchers.
Then later in Spring training Pitchers become better then the hitters.

He will level off soon enough. But nice to see he is getting his hacks in.

He is really fun to watch but as someone else said above his OBP hasn't been very good.

I would've bet a Franklin that Dave Kingman was 1 of the 3. I'm suprised he's actually not the other two.

Me too, but I was surprised that it was his 1976 season and not his 1982 season when he led the league in HR with 37 but only batted .204. However, his slugging percentage was only .432 that year. That's gotta be a record for the lowest slugging percentage while leading the league in HR.

With his 99 RBIs in 1982, I wonder if that's the only time a HR champ didn't get 100 RBIs (modern era, non-strike years)...I'll have to check both of those now.

Didn't have to go back too far...Fred McGriff led the AL in HR with 36 in 1989 with only 92 RBIs.
