New Kansas City Royals First Baseman Mike Jacobs has now hit 4 Home Runs in Spring Training, behind only Craig Monroe (6) and Ryan Howard (5). Jacobs came to the Royals this offseason as the Marlins didn't want to pony up the arbitration dollars Jacobs was going to get. With 32 HR and 93 RBIs with the Marlins last year (and a $395,000 salary), Jacobs avoided arbitration by coming to an agreement with the Royals for one year and $3.275 million.
While looking at Jacobs' stats last year, I noticed that even though his slugging was .514, his OBP was a paltry .299. I thought it odd that someone would have a slugging over .500 but an OBP under .300, so I looked it up.
In seasons where a player qualified for a batting title (usually 502 plate appearances), only 3 times has a player had a .500 slugging percentage and an OBP under .300. Here they are: http://www.bb-ref.com/pi/shareit/tuHR
I wish Jacobs the best, but he needs to get on base a little more often to make the Royals better.
