I am pretty obsessive compulsive when it comes to my scanning. I want to have a nice crisp scan of my cards, especially the ones in nice BGS cases or one-touches.

I recently purchased an EPSON V30 scanner, and it did an amazing job on most cardboard, and an outstanding job on slabs. However, anything with a reflective surface, the scanner had a terrible streaking issue.

The folks at NewEgg were gracious enough to exchange that scanner for a new CanoScan 5600F scanner. This thing is a big mamma-jamma and does a pretty good job with scans.

See for yourself:

Wow, very nice scans. I have been meaning to pick one up with a CCD element, the all in one I have now can't cope with slabs or one-touches very well. Those look great though.

Those are some great scans. I took a look at Newegg and couldn't find a 5600H. I did however find a 5600F. Would you happen to know what the difference might be? What qualities does one look for in a scanner?

Sorry, it is the 5600F, I just fat-fingered the model number.

I simply looked for a CCD image sensor and single source scanning mechanism, not multiple LEDs which caused the streaking with my other scanners.

Very nice. i need another scanner, but I can use photoshop to enhance my pictures to make them look top of the line. auto color, Auto contrast, and auto tone usually fixes the problem.

Yea, I typically use Photoshop to acquire the images from my scanner, however, it's hard to correct a image that get's scanned like this:

To something that looks like this:

Try scanning it at a higher DPI, then size it down.

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the DPI, but everything to do with the image sensor in the scanner.

Some more examples. Still fiddling with all of the settings. These were scanned inside their top loaders:

I just bought the 5600F - I'm having trouble getting it to pick up my BGS cases though, it continues to scan the full platen although I choose "Auto Detect (Multiple Documents)" or "Auto-Detect" as the document size. Any tips? Have any of you run into this problem at all?

yeah, most of the time it's not going to auto-crop correctly. you should be able to crop the scan pretty close before you save it.

Those are really nice scans. I picked up a Cano Scan Li DE 100 in October. I haven't had the time to get it out of the box. I wasn't going to use it for cards, rather for hard copy documents, but your results are excellent and they may motivate me to reconsider. Thanks for sharing.

Bradical - Keep us posted on those scan settings once you find the sweet spot. I may pick up one of those being that the price is so reasonable. My current scanner is horrible with slabs.
