Re: NL Cy Young Watch - Halladay and Kershaw 9/9

just looked up run support, all 4 pitchers are around 5 and a half runs per game of run support, which is actually on
the lower side, some pitchers are getting 8+ runs on average.

Put most other offenses in the NL behind Lee and Halladay and they are still dominant pitchers. However, I believe their numbers go down because they don't have the formidable Philly lineup giving them the comfort of run support.

I haven't see the hard data, but I've got to believe Kershaw and Kennedy (especially Kershaw) know they stand a good chance of having to win 3-2, 2-1, etc. Tonight's game is a prime example. Kershaw went into the hostile environment in SF and was on the hook for the loss until the bats finally woke up in the 8th & 9th. By contast, Halladay was up 3-0 before he even took the mound, and was up 5-0 before he gave up the run in the 7th.

Don't get me wrong, Lee and Halladay are tremendous pitchers, but mentally it has GOT to be easier to pitch your game knowing the lineup behind you is going to give you a pretty darn good chance to win.

I tend to agree that it's a little easier for the Phillies pitchers to go out and pitch right now because the team as a whole just expects to win. I thought Kershaw was leading the Cy Young a race a few weeks back when I started tracking it and he certainly hasn't done anything to lose that lead.

I'd say it's pretty dang close. Kershaw's stats are very impressive, the same can be said of Kennedy, Lee and Halladay. They all have similar stats. If all four continue to pitch well for the remaining starts it will be tough to choose. My bias would be for Halladay to win. But, I wouldn't be upset if Kershaw won the CY.

Regardless of what happens with the CY race, it's nice to see the amount of quality arms in the National League growing by the year. Hopefully they all stay here and don't migrate to the Sox or Yanks.

and hopefully the umps in the playoffs any of them might be playing in, don't squeeze them the entire game
because fans like to see offense!

Cliff Lee's scoreless streak comes to an end, though the run shouldn't have scored because the Phils blew an easy double play.

Our back ups match up well with the Brewers.

Cliff Lee gets through the 7th.

7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Sitting at 100 pitches so not sure how much longer he's going to last.

I just think Lee and Halladay are going to take votes away from each other at this point. Besides Kershaw has been slightly better. I still think he wins it.

Ian Kennedy is going to have to throw 3 consecutive shutouts to win it.

Re: NL Cy Young Watch - Ian Kennedy 9/13

Ian Kennedy didn't pitch bad tonight but he needed to be outstanding and get a win which he did not.

6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

I think this pretty much eliminates his previously slim chance of winning the Cy Young

Kershaw
18 Wins, 2.36 ERA, 231 K, 1.00 WHIP

Lee
16 Wins, 2.44 ERA, 211 K, 1.03 WHIP

Halladay
17 Wins, 2.44 ERA, 204 K, 1.05 WHIP

Kennedy
19 wins, 2.99 ERA, 182 K, 1.12 WHIP

Can we just give this to Halladay already? Complete game shutout with practically NO run support.

Re: NL Cy Young Watch - Halladay and Kershaw 9/14

Didn't get to see the game and it was the Astros, but a shutout is a shutout. Kershaw should have a much harder time with the Diamondbacks but he was pretty fired up after Parra took a long time watching the HR he hit after narrowly avoiding a ball at his head earlier in the at bat.

Kershaw
18 Wins, 2.36 ERA, 231 K, 1.00 WHIP

Lee
16 Wins, 2.44 ERA, 211 K, 1.03 WHIP

Halladay
18 Wins, 2.34 ERA, 211 K, 1.04 WHIP

Kennedy
19 wins, 2.99 ERA, 182 K, 1.12 WHIP

Not so fast Halladay.

Kershaw throwing another gem:

4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

That will be kind of cool if they stay pitching on the same day the rest of the year.

Halladay and Kershaw have had roughly the same number of games against "lesser foes".

Parra was leaning over the plate and Kershaw clipped him on the elbow. Over-reaction by the umpire.
