Is it just me, or are no hitters not as special as they used to be? Seems like they happen way more than they used to.

hmm lets see. Last year it happened 6 times. The most since 1991. So far there's been two no hitters and we're only in May. Theres already been the same amount of no hitters in thirty games as there were in all of 2008 and 2009.

How long have you been a baseball fan? Doesn't seem like you have been one long enough to appreciate how rare no-hitters actually are....

Btw, Verlander's today could be the last one all year. Just b/c there are 2 already in May doesn't mean there are going to be six again like last year.

Saw most of the game and it was evident he had no-hit stuff early on. Congrats to him. Thought he'd get the perfecto but kudos to Arencibia on drawing the walk. That was a hell of an at-bat.

What an atrocious line-up the Jays had out there today; especially after Lind left due to injury. Not taking anything away from Verlander but each time I saw who was due up I thought, "well, there's another inning...."

Only the second no-hitter ever at the Dome (22 years). I was actually at the first one in 1990 (Dave Stewart for the A's).

You're right. A lot of things have to go right/get lucky for a no-hitter and one would definitely be balls getting through an infield. Couple that with it being a homer friendly park and it's certainly not a shock.

On grass, the ball rolls smooth, regardless of speed. On turf, it can be a slow roller and might hit a seam and changes direction.

Yeah no kidding.

There are 4,860 chances each year for a no-hitter to be thrown. Even with 6 last year (a higher number than usual), that still means there were 4,854 times it could have happened but didn't.


Not Special? You're out of your mind if you don't think a no-hitter is special. Especially one where the pitcher faces the minimum number of batters and allows only one baserunner.

That's because it was a bigger deal. Liriano's no hitter was a no hitter, but it wasn't as dominate as most. Also, news loves controversy, and a blown perfect game by an ump is bigger news.

Actually - it IS just you. You're allowing recent results to cloud long term statistical trends. Look back at 1990-91 - would you have said the same thing back then, "eh... 13 no-hitters in the past two seasons, these things just aren't what they used to be." There are also an additional 4 teams in MLB which equates to 324 additional games or 648 additional chances for no-hitters per season. It's your perception of 'rarity value' but you really have no statistical backing for it.
