lol this is hardly spam. And if the OP didnt post about it someone else would have shortly after. Its one of those cards that it doesn't matter because everyone is going to know about it anyway.

Oh come on. This is 100% spam. He didn't have to link to the auction. He could have just told the story. On top of that, it's a "new" member who keeps bumping the thread whenever it gets low. I don't CARE that it is spam, but it most certainly IS spam. It's the perfect kind of spam, actually. Spam that fools people into thinking it isn't spam.

I think the key to the eBay listing is the subtitle informing the buyer that "Shipping is only $2.50 no matter how many cards you win." Without that, I don't think we'd be seeing the sort of bidding on this item that we are.

Spam is ok if it leads to interesting discussion as this does.

I fully expect Olbermann to be in on this auction near closing. Watch for one of his usernames of "merkle" with some numbers after it.

For the price this one is going to end you could buy a whole bat. Now what would you rather have a sliver of bat or the whole thing or does the tiny picture of Clemente make it that much cooler? Also it destroys a piece of memorabilia that is irreplacable.

This could be it's own thread I'm sure... I've thought about this and had trouble pulling the trigger on cards because I purchased a game used entire baseball bat of Albert Belle for $100 dlvd and I've paid more that this for a small piece of a bat on a card lol... As for just autographs, I can buy every single signed baseball of Albert Belle on eBay for like $25 but I buy sticker autos on cards for much more lol.... it's the love of the hobby I guess (but also why I miss the '90s!)

The argument you are going to get on this topic from many is "I collect cards, not full game used memorabilia, that is why I would rather have the card over the entire bat." I say one can collect both.

In most cases the card with the bat piece is priced way under what a full gamer would cost. To me it makes sense to collect a bat card as you can't afford a Mantle, Ruth or Cobb game used bat. But when the pieces on cards become more than the whole bat is worth then it seems silly to me.

As far as collecting cards not bats, I think most people with 5K to drop could afford a bat tube wall hanger display.

For purposes of asset liquidity, ease of storage, market authentication recognition if I later decide to move the piece and collectibility, I am going to take the card over the full game used item. I have purchased several cards, where, for the price of the card, I could have had a full equivalent game-used item or in the case of cut-autograph cards, I could have had a signed check or baseball for less. There are very few full game-used items that I have a desire to own - regardless of whether I can afford a wall display, I'll take the card.

A cut check is much different than a vintage bat. As far as value, many big time collectors are starting to buy up the vintage game used stuff at a higher rate than ever before due to the destruction being done by card companies. Talk to Joe Orlando about what he thinks about the value of game used bats and I think you would change your valuation of cards versus bats.

I agree with you in regards to direct valuation - that's why I left that part out in my initial statement but I could see where one could infer that I was referring to absolute value. For me, while the eventual ROI on the memorabilia may be higher, the purchasing, storage, authentication (at least from a layman's perspective when selling to them) and overall transaction process is much easier with cards than with full pieces of memorabilia.

The Bolded was Very Well said! As for myself if I collected only one player I would consider picking up Full gamers and bats for my collection instead of cards but I collect pieces from every hofer and some current players and there is no way I would have room for bats and jerseys in my place. It just wouldnt work. I understand whats being said about "why would people spend more on a piece of cardboard with only a sliver of the whole bat" versus the full gamer and like someone said earlier it just comes down too "I collect cards and not full game used memorbilia". Another thing for me is it honestly does not bother me one bit that these companies cut up rare pieces of memorbilia which could be another reason why I collect cards with pieces rather than full gamers.

This and also nice job totally blasting a dude and then posting to the auction for everyone to see... Obviously the guy (or kid) is an idiot or not as bright as some BUT I would of left that one private if you were going to reply the way you did lol
