Thats nice. The Bowman are cool cards, but they are definitely driven by the new collector who holds Topps on some weird pedestal. Drives me nuts actually2005 Topps Turkey Red Gold Parallel 306 Josh Gibson #/50 -- A throwback to the historic Turkey Red set released in 1911, fittingly the same year Josh Gibson was born. It features my favorite image of Gibson, used frequently on multiple sets including famously his USPS Postage Stamp.
Gibson doesn't have very many cards. I don't feel Shakey's Pizza should be worth what it is, but the HoF collectors are all over it along with Laughlin Black Stars set which is just a caricature. I still on the lookout for a NSCC Lelands Toleteros promo for the right price, but that is much easier to track down that this Many of his subsequent A&G, Topps flagship and Stadium Club cards have photoshopped team logos. In his small library of cards, I feel this set remains as his best modern release even after 20 years. I prefer the matte textured finish to the shine of some of his refractored releases. This card has the same picture and print run as his 2023 Bowman Chrome Refractor which goes for hundreds more. I also have a Red parallel which is a nice color match to his uniform, but excited to add this Gold /50 which is the second most limited parallel after the 1/1.

In the discussion for sure but he isn't even considered the best player of the ***** Leagues by most of his contemporaries. Oscar Charleston and Willie Wells got mentioned more as better all around players by all the ***** Leaguers I met than Gibson did. Josh was considered the best power hitter but Charleston, Wells, and Turkey Stearnes were all better all around players.Hey, that's a nice card.
There's so much mythology around Josh Gibson, I wonder how good he really was. Was he really the black Babe Ruth?
I'm a guy who thinks the Babe was the best ever. And I think Mays and Bonds are very close seconds. And I think that Ohtani is only starting to put his hat in the ring. So when I think about Gibson, I really wonder. We don't even have all his stats for Chrissakes.
So I just don't know. But I'll say this. If he was as good as his contemporaries said he ways, he's in the discussion.
