Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

Looks like the lineup is still hitting well, even without Doumit. Maholm looked great through the first 3 innings, and then things fell apart. He worked himself into a lot of deep counts and was giving up some hard hit balls. Adam LaRoche went 4 for 5, and Andy looks like he is more comfortable at the plate. Also, I've never been a big Nyjer supporter, but I really like his ability to rattle a pitcher when he is on the basepaths. Even though Nate was a more complete player and worked better counts atop the lineup last year, he wasn't nearly as disruptive as Nyjer has been so far.

I am trying not to get too excited about the pitching staff but it's good to see them off to such a solid start. Morgan looks good so far but I don't think he can keep it up for the long run.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

I don't know that Nyjer can keep it up much longer, but it sure has been fun to watch over the past 2 weeks. And I think it's just a matter of time until the pitching staff implodes. There's no way the starters can keep giving 6-7 solid innings every start. Once we start seeing Hansen, Yates, and Chavez on a regular basis things will get messy. I did notice JR seems to be playing matchups more than before. Last year it seemed like a reliever was coming in for a full inning, regardless of what batters were coming up.

One thing that never caught my eye as much from my seats in previous years is that McLouth gets absolutely terrible jumps on balls. I knew he takes bad routes, but it amazes me the number of times he's started going back on a ball that is well in front of him or vice versa.

Zach Duke was brilliant tonight! 3rd win of the year! I was hoping for the complete game but his pitch count was getting up there and Meek finished it off strong. I love MLB TV get to watch all the games :D

Since this is the Pirates thread, I'll post my IP auto success from after Friday's game:

Nyjer Morgan
Matt Capps
Adam LaRoche
Andy LaRoche
Eric Hinske

Above average by my standards. I had never gone to try to get Pirates autos before, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

that was a great rebound performance after his poor start last time out. he looked as good as he did in his first 2 starts and I really wanted him to get the complete game but he looked a little tired and it was good to see Meek close it out for him.

Jack Wilson is the latest Pirate to get placed on the 15 day DL. Looks like Bixler is going to get another shot.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

the Pirates were swept by the Brewers and have now lost 18 straight games at Miller Park and 15 straight to the Brewers overall.

after an off day today Zach Duke goes against former Pirate Bronson Arroyo and the Reds Friday at 7:05pm. hopefully Duke can get the Bucs back on track and keep this hot start to the season rolling.

The Pirates need to score some runs this inning, I would hate to have Zach Duke get a loss and only give up 1 run

Duke looked very good once again. Of course all that's meaningless if the offense can't even muster a run. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the starting pitching still looking very good.

Hopefully Yates can take care of business and we can get a few runs in the bottom of the 9th.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

Maholm pitched another great game tonight only to have the pen blow it again. Bucs were up 3-1 going into the 8th and end up giving up 2 runs to tie it at 3 and then take the lead 4-3 going into the 9th only to have Capps blow the save and they lose 7-4.

that is now 16 straight loses to the Brewers.

How long ago was it that Capps and Fielder got into it over Capps throwing at Prince? Seems like the schnide has been on since then.

I read in one of the Pittsburg papers, this sports writer was actually dreading the series (saying he was glad it was a mercifully short 2-game set); way to not be the littlest bit optimistic...

that's all they talked about on the Pirates broadcast was the tension between the teams. I certainly hope the Bucs can beat the Brewers tomorrow so the media here stops talking about it.
