Amazing how tough they are to pull... How crazy would it be to pack pull a red today

this popped up in my Ultra Platinum saved search:

1996 Fleer Ultra Prime Leather Press Print Plate 1/1 Kirby Puckett

I hadn't been paying close enough attention to realize printing plates had been issued in any product before '97. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I think that's a bankruptcy one, not pack issued. Fleer sold its inventory of plates in bulk in bankruptcy liquidation auction.

Yeah that is exactly what it is. I have a couple that I have bought over the last couple years but I think they are pretty crappy so tend to stay away from them.

Pinnacle Press Plates made their public debut in 1997

i remember because i was Super Collecting Joe Sakic up until that point, and when 97/98 Pinnacle Hockey had those (damn) printing plate 1/1s i knew the possibility of owning every pack issued Sakic died.

Truthfully, I think it's an aftermarket job.

This is correct. It was made by someone with no affiliation to the card companies.
Yeah that was my thought when I bought my first one. I have only bought one other since then.

Looks legit to me. If that was a Juan it would go well over $100.

The fact that the seller specificially says "These are not pulled from packs!! Please don't ask ~~" raises some red flags.

All I'll say is that the finished '96 Ultra Prime Leather issue has certain after-printing traits...namely heavy embossing/debossing. The fact that the "printing plate" shows highlights at embossed surfaces and doesn't adequately delineate printed shadow suggests it's a mere copy of a final production piece that's been etched onto the surface of a piece of metal.

"Telling" a fake plate in hand is less to do with knowing what the texture of a printing plate looks like and more to do with an understanding of offset printing and after-printing enhancements. Even the fakes appear as "etched" metal.

Even that Classic Juan shows "highlights" on the etching.

I don't touch plates unless they are listed in the beckett data base. It's too easy to make plates and I don't have time to chase ghosts or wonder if they are real. If I do have any questions about them, I can always just ask my dad(did printing for over 30 years). He'll at least have a pretty damn good guess.
