The Raiders already were pretty good on D, and have three pretty good RBs, so if they can get anything from the passing game, Maybe they can compete in that awful division.

This is another stupid move by the Raider imo.

If they really wanted to trade a first round pick, they should have pursued something to help their run defense.

Really, they should have secretly kidnapped Al Davis, and sent him to an uncharted island. That would be the best thing for their team.

At this stage Seymour immediately becomes Oakland's premier defensive lineman. I anticipate a contract extension being offered (particularly after they cut Terdell Sands) to Seymour. There is potential on the offence side of the ball in Oakland - the defence has been truly abysmal in the pre-season. The team needs good locker-room guys and veteran leadership as they are the youngest team in the NFL. These are both attributes Seymour provides.

Interestingly enough, Seymour is only signed through 2010. So, if he doesn't help the Raiders, and doesn't re-sign with them, in 2011 the Raiders will not have a 1st round pick NOR will they have Seymour. Unless there's an unannounced deal already reached.

No doubt. Bruschi sucked the last few years and Seymour isn't the dominant force he once was.

As a huge raiders fan i love this trade for 2 reasons. First our D-line is greatly improved with a solid vet who brings leadership to our defense. Second the raiders have a horrible draft history in the first round and really the draft in general but the real isue is paying these top 5 picks every year. they simply cant afford it. I would much rather havea guy that has proven he can play then some over paid rookie who hasnt proven anything. look at jamarcu russell if he doesnt have a big year he will be considered another bust for the raiders and join a long list of crappy picks.

We posed earlier today the question of whether defensive lineman Richard Seymour will report to the Raiders after the trade that sent him from New England for a first-round pick in 2011.

NFL spokesman Michael Signora has outlined for us the procedure that would apply, if Seymour stays away.

The precise protocol is determined by the terms of the trade. "Traditionally the first condition is that the trade is contingent upon the player or players reporting and passing a physical," Signora said.

If the player doesn't report, the two teams can try to come up with a new agreement, or the trade could be called off.

The only leverage that can be exerted against the player is the dreaded "five-day letter," a precursor to placement on the reserve/left squad list.

"The club sends a letter to the player warning him that, in five days, the club has the right to place him on the reserve/left squad list," Signora said. "It explains to him that if they do place him in that category, he cannot play again this season, etc. After sending that letter and the expiration of the five-day period, the club does not have to place the player on the reserve/left squad list, but it may do so."

If the trade conditions the transaction on Seymour reporting, the Pats would be the team sending the five-day letter. If the Pats and the Raiders re-work the deal, the Raiders could in theory acquire Seymour's rights without Seymour actually reporting, just as the Buccaneers did a couple of years ago with quarterback Jake Plummer.

The Raiders and the Patriots could hinge the precise compensation for the trade on whether Seymour reports to Oakland, and whether he lands on the reserve/left club list.

Once on the reserve/left club list, Seymour would be unable to play for anyone in 2009, and his contract would toll by a full year, with his salary of roughly $3.7 million applicable in 2010, if he decides at that point to show up.

So, basically, this thing could go in a lot of different directions if, as some think, Seymour will refuse to play for the Raiders.

Retired safety Rodney Harrison told PFT Monday night that he has spoken to his former Patriots teammate and close friend Richard Seymour about the deal that sent Seymour to Oakland.

And?

"He's not thrilled," said Harrison, now an analyst for NBC's Football Night in America. "Who would be thrilled to go to the Oakland Raiders? Maybe somebody who's happy to just get a chance but not a guy like Richard Seymour, a five-time Pro Bowler. For a veteran player to go to Oakland at this juncture it's just difficult.

"Put yourself in his position," Harrison added. "He's going from a first-class organization to one of the worst in the NFL. You have the head coach fighting the assistant coaches, the owner involved in the day-to-day operations, guys who don't believe in the quarterback. . . . Tom Brady to JaMarcus Russell? Come on. Is that something to look forward to? Why would he be excited?"

Asked if Seymour would report to the Raiders, Harrison said, "I don't know that. Only Richard knows that. But I wouldn't go to Oakland. There's no way in the world I would go to Oakland. The only way I would report is if they promised they wouldn't franchise me after this year."

Seymour, who turns 30 in October, is due to become a free agent in March 2010.

Harrison acknowledged the sound business sense the deal made for both teams involved.

"It's a great deal for the Raiders," he said. "Combine Richard with Tommy Kelly on the defensive line, you have [Nnamdi] Asomugha in the secondary, there's some talent there and you've brought in a player who knows how to win and be a professional.

"And you look at the move made by [Patriots head coach Bill] Belichick, and you can see him saying, 'I'd rather get rid of a guy before the last year of his contract.' He knows the Raiders will stink so it's a top-10 pick in return for a guy who's gonna be 30. You know what? That's the business.

"The trade off is, guys get to win championships and make a lot of money, but at the end, it's business. I knew that and instead of my getting whacked [by New England], I whacked myself. If you make money and you're older, it's inevitable you're gonna get whacked."

So that's what happened to Randy Hanson.
