The latest Tuff Stuff has a story about a guy who pulled a ton of crazy stuff at Dave and Busters.

Basically, this guy has some weird hand eye coordination that enables him to win the top prize amounts in those ticket games.

So this guy basically wipes out DandB's across the nation and had most of all the better prizes.
Becuase of that, he started getting into those TriStar "Worlds Greatest" boxes and pulled a Leaf Paige and nothing else...for a long time.

So he winds up stock pilling boxes upon boxes of the worlds greatest pack boxes, reluctantly and just doesnt open them until one night when he cant sleep. He reached under his bed for a box and got the redemption for 86/87 Fleer Basketball box.

And dont forget the guy who a couple of years ago pulled the 1952 Topps redemption for a Mantle at a Busters in Hawaii.

So if you have coupon s from Busters, buy Tristar stuff instead of anything else.

I was recently at Dave and Buster's for the first time in years. At the end of the night, I had a couple of points left over and the only thing I could use them for was the light game. My friend said he was really good and sure enough he timed it out and nailed the jackpot. All the prizes there are really overpriced though.

My cousin's friend works there. He's the guy that opens and restocks the machines with tickets. Over the course of 2 years he has gotten like four xbox 360s, an ipad, and 2 PS3s. He manages to get his hands on tickets and he gives them to friends to buy stuff for him.

He's been working there for around 3 years I think. All I know is that he gets his hand on either used tickets or new tickets and gives them to friends so that he doesnt get "caught". The friends then buy him stuff and he buys them a drink or something afterwards.

I just got some of the mini helmets they have. Sure you end up spending an assload of money to get enough tickets. It'd be cheaper just to go to a shop and buy them. But when in Rome...

As for pulling a redemption for a 52 mantle...one thing that worries me is when they had the sweepstakes for the T206 Honus Wagner card a long while back, a postal worker in Florida won. And sure enough the IRS came after her for taxes on it. Which is total BS IMO. So even though it was a once in a lifetime chance, she had to sell it. Wonder if they'd do the same thing on a Mantle?

You go to a game, get a free souvenier and now they want you to pay taxes on something you might not even ever want to sell.

That's a good question, but I'm relatively sure the answer is yes. In raffles where you win something like a car they make you pay taxes, and I'm sure they don't ask if you ever intend to sell.

If I recall correctly, the IRS eventually relented on the Bonds ball, but the guy ended up selling it anyway so he paid tax on the gain. As for the Mantle/Wagner-type pulls, it all depends on whether it's a prize.

I don't think pulling a high-value card from a box or pack would ever be construed as a prize, but if you enter a contest or sweepstakes and win a valuable prize, you do have income, thus income tax to pay at the time of receipt based on the value of the prize. That being said, unless its a really high profile item like the '52 Mantle or T-206 Wagner, the IRS isn't likely to know. Although depending on the formality of the contest/sweepstakes and the organizer, there may be documentation on the other end that does you in.

Yeah but its BS. I mean...lets say, hypothetically, you win a T206 Wagner in Gretzky type condition. Say you keep it until the day you die. So in essence you never made an actual penny off the card. Why should you be taxed on that? Does anyone else not find this somewhat odd. I realize they consider it an asset and all but like I said...nothing is really an asset if you don't realize any financial gain from it. I am sure the IRS has their own definition of it that suits their motivations but I think its crazy.

Only reason I figure you could get hosed on a card pulled from a box is if its really valuable. Something crazy like the Stras super. In that case...to me its just like the guy who caught the ball from Bonds. His admission would be like your price for a box. Maybe all he gets is the chance to watch a game and maybe all you get is run of the mill cards. But if by chance you pull something valuable, like he caught the ball...then they can really rake you over the coals?


I did not know about them relenting on the Bond's ball. I probably wouldn't have sold it. Hell...maybe I would. Who knows. Kind of hard to stare down that kind of a payday and say no. But in any case...I think its wrong to be virtually forced to sell the damn thing. I am glad to hear they let it go.
