Today's photo of the day features a Yankee manager who could create as much of a disturbance on the field as other Yankee managers (Billy Martin). As many of you know from watching the movie *61, Ralph Houk was tabbed as the Yankee manager who replaced legendary Casey Stengel and became the first Yankee manager to treat Mickey Mantle as a grown up. You can see i this undated photo that he was not afraid to go out on the field and make his point when he felt it was needed.
Houk was a Army Ranger combat and veteran of WWII. He fought in legendary battles such as Bastone and the Battle of the Bulge while earning a purple heart, Bronze Star and various other military honors. He rose to the rank of Major and would keep this rank as his nickname the rest of his life. Houk would find himself in various roles within baseball starting after his playing career. He would be a bullpen catcher, scout, coach, manager and front office executive before retiring in 1989. He would pass away at the age of 90 but left a lasting legacy in the world of baseball.
