Yesterday would have been Joe DiMaggio's 99th birthdate and I totally missed it witht he photo of the day. So, to make up for it today I am posting a few DiMaggio photos I found interesting.

A young DiMaggio as a San Fransisco Seal. The Seals were in the Pacific Coast League which was a league many felt was on par with the Major Leagues of that time.

Joe with his brothers Vince on the left and Dom on the right. All three brothers were major league centerfielders.

I may have posted this snap shot previously but felt it was relevant for today's posting. This is a snap shot taken in the midst of DiMaggios 56 game hitting streak at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis on June 7, 1941.

This was likely part of series of exhibition games held after the 1946 regular season. Because the Dodgers and Cardinals tied for the pennant, National League rules allowed for a best of three game series to determine the regular season champion. The waiting Red Sox, with time to kill, hastily put together a three-game exhibition to give the players work.
Joe D is undoubtedly there as a favor to younger brother Dom, and his uniform, indeed did not arrive on time. Several all stars played for the visitors at a time when inter league rivalry was much more prevalent than it is today.

Joe DiMaggio was the man! My all time favorite player. His brother was a helluva centerfielder as well, extremely underrated.

Very interesting man. I enjoyed reading about his reclusivity and penchant for being able to cut off good friends for what he thought was bad behavior towards him. I just wish he would have been more welcoming to Mantle.

From the 3 or 4 autobiographies I have read about DiMaggio I honestly dont think he was welcoming to anyone, especially Mantle. He was the oddest guy in that he had the world at his feat but couldnt or wouldnt trust anyone. He seemed to think everyone was out to use him or something and never got close to anyone except maybe a select person or two. I just read that he wouldnt even talk with his brothers near the end of their lives because of things he thought they said in the press about him. He had almost no relationship with his own son. When you think about it, he had a great life. He was a baseball player, idol of millions, had money and married Marilyn Monroe but in the end he was a loner without many friends he could count on. His life could have been so much more but he just didnt want that I guess.
