Moose Skowrn, the first baseman for the fabled Yankee teams of the 50's and early 60's would have been 83 years old today if he had not passed away in 2012. Moose played on a team with personalities that overshadowed him and I always had the impression that he didnt care. With players like Mantle, Maris and Berra on your team being directed by a manager named Stengel, players like Moose would hardly ever be in the spotlight.
Moose was a Chicago boy who went to Purdue and played both baseball and football. In his sophmore year he went to play in Minneapolis where the Yankees took notice and signed him almost right away. Moose would go onto play from 1954 to 1967 in the Majors with the Yankees, Angels, Senators and White Sox where he remained as a ambassador for the team until his death. Moose's talents were recognized when he was elected to the All Star team eight times. Skowron also appeared in eight World Series' all but onw with the Yankees. Check out his stats...I think you will be surprised at how good he really was.
Moose Skowron would have been a star on any team but the Yankees but he was so comfortable where he was at he didnt mind playing second fiddle to the rest of his teammates. I had a chance to meet and talk to him on numerous occasions as I worked with his daughter and would see him around the ball park frequently. Always quick with a handshake and a great smile he was ready to talk baseball and didnt mince words when you asked his opinion on a subject. The world and baseball lost a great man when he passed away.
