ESPN NEW YORK -- Livid over Alex Rodriguez's decision to tweet an update on his rehab process, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had a message for the third baseman.

"You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, we will," Cashman told ESPN New York.
"Alex should just shut the f--- up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."

Rodriguez tweeted Tuesday that he has been cleared to play in rehab games.
But Rodriguez's comments seemed to contradict what Cashman told ESPN New York's Wallace Matthews on Monday.

"Visit from Dr. [Bryan] Kelly over the weekend, who gave me the best news - the green light to play games again!" Rodriguez tweeted.

On Monday, Cashman shot down a report that Rodriguez had been given the go-ahead to play in games.
"He has not been cleared by our doctors to play in rehab games yet," he said. "He's getting closer. There's no doubt about it. But we don't have a date for him to start playing games yet. It could be July 1. It could also be July 5, or maybe June 25."

Cashman explained that Dr. Kelly had no jurisdiction over Rodriguez's rehab once the third baseman left New York to go to Tampa. Dr. Kelly had been approved by the team to perform the surgery and oversee Rodriguez's recovery in New York.

I'm sure this has to do with the Yanks trying to get out of, or at least collecting any insurance on A-Rods contract. The insurance will only kick in if A-Rod misses the entire season, and if he does, it will cover either 70 or 80% of his $28M for this year. So if he comes back and plays a week and goes 0-20 and gets injured again, they will be S.O.L. on collecting anything for this year....

Either way, it's severely poor form for a GM to speak as such publicly.
I agree with the others that say he's fed up. If you we're paying this a$$clown all that money and had the constant PED cloud and distractions you'd have little patience as well.

I applaud Cashman in every way for this. A-Rod has become a total frack up and he needs to be put in his place. Amid all of the PED use, under-performing in the playoffs (while handing out his phone number to any girl that is itching to get wet when he gets benched), and numerous injuries, I would be fed up as well if I am Cashman. A-Rod needs to understand how to become a better role model, not only for his teammates, but for the organization as a whole.

Maybe Cashman should have thought about that before he gave A-Rod all that money. A-Rod is Cashman's golem. They're BOTH douches.

I agree, cashman is not getting his money's worth, but AROD has contributed significantly, except last year going 3 for 25 in the post season

Well, in defense of Cashman, he never wanted to give ARod that contract, the Steinbrenners were the ones that wanted that deal done.
In defense of ARod, I think this got blown way out of proportion. He didnt say he was cleared by the Yankees to play rehab games, all he said was that the doctor gave him the green light to play rehab games.

after arod "came clean" in front of his team mates, ownership and the fans. he was given a second chance, that he almost immediately pissed down the toilet with this biogenesis crap. alex doesn't respect his team, his employers or the fans. don't blame cash at all.

I'm just saying he could have been a bit more tactful with it
