I used to think that I needed to focus on just one or two player collections. I decided to go ahead and collect the guys I want. So from baseball I collect Adam Dunn, Pete Rose, and Chris Sabo. I also have a small Ken Griffey Jr. collection, but I don't really pick much Jr. stuff up anymore. Then I have a player collection of Rey Maualuga in football.

JOE!!! you finally took the leap into the chris sabo collecting subculture? congrats and good luck!

Thanks brother. I was always a fan of his and have been thinking about collecting him for awhile. I finally decided to take the plunge.

Nice to see the great diversity in collections. Many minor star and common players being collected. I dig that.

I collect two (Sammy Sosa and David Wright). However, I don't "super-collect" either as I neither have the patience or budget.

My focus is Sosa.

Trevor Cahill, Lance Johnson, Pacific inserts, and Larry Walker. I only pick up autos of Cahill, rare cards for Johnson, cool looking Pacific inserts, and rare cards for Walker. I was planning on adding some other players, but I can't decide who.

To give it some perspective:

I collect a lot of the following(at least more so than others...I will actually go out and look for their cards at times) for certain reasons.

Scott Kazmir- local boy who got drafted out of Cy Falls and was a damn good pitcher. I have some nice high end and a ton of his autos and GU including his prospect premiers auto which is THE card I wanted to have of his.

Carl Crawford- same with Kazmir as far as the locality goes except he played at Davis High School. Don't have anythign super high end but do have a few of his autos and a lot of GU and patches.

Josh Beckett- Same with the two above except he came from Spring High School. I always liked Beckett and knew he'd be a big time pitcher. I have heard many stories about him from people I know and he has a hell of a chip on his shoulder. Supposedly he was the "fat kid who got picked on" when he was a youngster and he really had a growth spurt in high school so he filled out well. The guy was a legend around here in high school baseball too. I also remember dabbling a bit in cards in high school and I was lucky enough to get a set of Fleer Update with his rookie in it and me and a few of my teamates marveld at how cool it was to have your own baseball card at 18 years old.

Jeff Bagwell- need I even say anything? Guy is a local legend and when you think of the astros...Him and Biggio ...well they kind of always were the astros for the last 20 years. When anybody said "The Astros", you thought of him and Biggio.

Craig Biggio- Got some decent stuff of his but mostly just a ton of different cards. Well over 500.

Luis Gonzalez- I have a nice chunk of different cards but nothing truly high end except a plate I pulled out of fliar showcase. I always enjoyed watching him play.

Nolan Ryan- You can't live in Texas and not collect Nolan Ryan. I actually got to see him pitch several times and he was a beast. They don't make them like that any more. Have a ton of his cards including two rookie cards.

Hank Aaron- One of my all time favorites. I just can't afford any real high end but I do have some nice vintage.

Ken Griffey Jr.- Who hasn't collected the guy? I have about half a three row box of his cards. I have 3 of his UD rookies since it was always one of those cards I wanted as a youngster but could never afford. I love watching him play and his swing. If his cards weren't so damn expensive...I'd be in full throttle.

J.D. Drew- I actually like watching him play and always thought he was a decent player. Got some pretty decent stuff of his though Boston collectors can be hard to beat.

Lance Berkman- Have some really nice high end of his and he is the face of the astros now.

Roy Oswalt- Same thing as with Berkman.

Hunter Pence- Really exciting to watch. What a real baseball player should look like. When I first went on ebay...I went freaking nuts and landed a ton of his autos and GU. I also tried to nail every single rookie card too.

Jerry Stackhouse- I remember liking the guy when he first came up. He was supposed to be the next Jordan. I even had the Fila tennis shoes which was no small feat since it was the first pair of shoes my mom ever bought me that cost over $20. He is the player I collect the most when it comes to basketball. Still would love to get him IP one day.

Antonio McDyess- I collected a lot of the rookies from this draft class. Its when I first got into basketball and started collecting the cards. Kinda odd that between this class and the one following it...these were some of the top notch layers in the game...even to this day(although I don't think McDyess or Stack count too much in that category).

Joe Smith- see McDyess.

Kevin Garnet- See McDyess.

Stephon Marbury- really liked him when he came out. Too bad his career seems to have gone south.

Marcus Camby- see Marbury.

Rockets players- This would include Drexler, the Dream, Casell, Horry, Mario Ellie...you name it.

Jack Lambert- Not too mcuh of his to colelct but I really like watching any old footage I can find of him and he seems like he was a rela nightmare which is what I like when it comes to football players.

Eddie George- really hard hitting player and fun to see old clips of. I have some pretty nice cards of his but still need to land an auto.

Vince Young- got some nice stuff but not a whole lot but I always watch for his stuff when I can. Hopefully he gets his crap straight and becomes more than just a college great.

Earl Campbell- Really great player to watch and has some nice stuff out there.

Owen Daniels- most down to earth guy you've ever met. Even came over and talked with me and a few friends while we were at the bar waiting to listen to his live radio show. Will sign anything you put down in front of him. Class act, hard player and the pride of the Texans( besides Andre and Matt).

Daunte Culpepper- just always liked him and have made some really good deals with tonsofcommons to land some nice cards of his.

James Casey- Another great player and came out of Rice.

I collect many more but for each player...I usually have a reason. Of course I hang onto guys like A-Rod and Jeter and whatnot but I collect everyone because either I like the player or they are good. Of course I collect a whole lot more than this but this is just the starting point at where I began my collection. Some of the guys I added along the way but like I said...I really do collect over about 250 players through three sports.
