#1 New York Yankees $ 202,689,028
#2 Philadelphia Phillies $ 172,976,379
#10 Detroit Tigers $ 105,700,231
#11 St. Louis Cardinals $ 105,433,572
#13 Texas Rangers $ 92,299,264
#17 Milwaukee Brewers $ 85,497,333
#25 Arizona Diamondbacks $ 53,639,833
#27 Tampa Bay Rays $ 41,053,571

So the yankees have 5 times the payroll that the rays have. The only team that has a smaller payroll is the royals who are owned by David glass (A former wal-mart ceo, big surprise). Even though I hope to god that the rays do not make it past the first round, it goes to show that money will help but it does not mean you couldnt do the same with much less.

Alex Rodriguez $ 32,000,000

arod actually makes 3/4ths the entire payroll of the rays.

The Red Sox didn't fail at buying third place though.

Oh, and about money, "Invest it and they will come" (Fans and championships)

The best thing about the Milwaukee payroll is that it has gotten to where it's at because the ownership and the fans believe.

There's pride to be had in being competative with a small payroll, but there's also pride to be had in working hard and building a team that can make money and sustain some success.

sorry but the sox have failed far far far far less at buying championships over the past 10 years than the yankees. not only do the sox have 2 championships to 1, but they also have always had a substantially lower salary than the yankees. i believe right now it it somewhere between 40-50 million dollars less. think about that. that 40-50 million per year could bring you in 2-3 top flight talents, meaning the yankees should have 2-3 more all stars than the red sox. the yankees are so pathetic lmao.

You're being a troll. stop please.

The Yankees are good. That's not up for debate this year. Yes, they speant a lot of money on their team and lo' and behold, it worked.

The Yankees pay there stars handsomely. Why, because they can. Jeter, Rivera, Posada, etc. The Yankees are loyal, albeit, sometimes a little too loyal.

Sure the Rays always have plenty of talent, but don't you think that maybe they ccould attract more than 15,000 fans a night if maybe they didn't field an entirely new team every other year?

Big salaries only allow teams to make more mistakes in their roster decisions. Good baseball is what matters, I love watching Royals hitting and the Rays.

sure the yankees are good.
that doesnt mean they have not failed at buying championships over the past 10 years at a far higher rate than the red sox.
and the red sox dont even have the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, so when people always bring them up us buying with the yanks, its laughable, as the phils have the 2nd highest payroll i believe

But next season the Red Sox are going to be giving out some cash.

Papelbon will get a raise.
Adrian Gonzalez is getting a raise. ($15.7m)
Carl Crawford is getting a raise. ($5.43m)

And whatever free agents they decide to overpay for.

Which is where the glass ceiling comes in. Sure, they can grow the organization and the fans and owner can dump money into the team in hopes of competing, but when you're in a part of the country that just doesn't have that much money period (TV, people to buy apperal, TV, BIG corporate sponsors, TV), it's hard to put enough scratch together.

So Prince will get a $150 million contract instead of a $100 million one, and Milwaukee will just have to soldier on.

well this has not happened yet and probably isnt going to happen

Nope Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford will be making more than $20m combined next season.

Well, unless Crawfords contract is heavily backloaded.

I'm not familiar with the Rays financial situation, But when a few of the younger stars on the team. Come up for new contracts, Will they be able to afford to resign Longo, Price and etc...? I imagine Longo is gonna command 10-15x his current salary and Price 8-10x. Does that put the Yankees, Phillies and other big spenders in the market for a top tier 3rd baseman?

well papelbon is not coming back, thats more of what i meant. salaries will still be far apart between the two teams worth 2-3 top flight talents
