The guy is going to destroy the Cardinals one way or another.

Either give him his money or you lose me. And you will only get 2 picks in return. He also doesnt seem like he would be willing to go back to STL once he hits free agency!

I personally dont like them, but hes being quite the harda$$ in this situation.

I guess the guy just wants 30 million a year when hes 40 whether his #s justify it or not.

This is why I am not envious of any GM. Imagine trying to get this worked out?

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says Pujols is feeling pressure from the Players Association to sign a massive deal, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark (on Twitter). La Russa says it's more than arm-twisting. He argues that the union is "dropping an anvil on [Pujols'] back through [the] roof of his house."

Not sure if anyone mentioned it in the other pujols threads but the news in St Louis last night talked to Fay Vincent who said what the cardinals should do is to make part of his deal to include partial ownership in the cardinals.

I don't see how someone coming off career lows in RBI, walks, batting average, slugging percentage, and on base percentage and who was largely invisible in the NLDS and WS could be demanding the same salary he was demanding at the beginning of the season (which many people already thought was too much). Career lows for Albert Pujols are still pretty damn good but geez what would be his contract demands had he put up a good season of 45 HR and 120 RBI?

I guess it depends where those extra 8 HRs and 21 RBIs would have been?
If they just padded a lead, does it really matter? Maybe they would have won a few more games?
But they still won the world series so I guess a few more HRs & RBIs wouldn't matter...
I think if he did get those higher numbers and it added a few more wins, the one guy may not have won $250,000!!!

The only reason the Cardinals even got to the playoffs was because the Braves tanked. The Cardinals underachieved for much of the year, which you can blame on Pujols. His numbers were mediocre for much of the year and he needed a good last few months to even end up with the numbers that he did. If the Cardinals had not made the playoffs, you can certainly point to Pujols' disappointing year as a contributing factor.

Then once they got into the playoffs, they rode on the backs of Carpenter, the bullpen, and timely hitting to win the WS. Pujols was a non-factor in really any of the 3 series.

7 HR's and 21 RBI represent roughly 20% production for a slugger, which is quite a lot. 20% fewer hits and a .300 hitter becomes a .240 hitter. 20% fewer wins and the Phillies of this year become the LA Dodgers.
