Question about Tim Wakefield.

As we all know, Tim is a Red Sox legend. He is one of the quietest; most interesting pitchers that this era has ever seen. I remember back to 2004 or so where Beckett posted an article with the top players with the least amount of certified autographs. If Topps signed Wakefield to a contract, would the prices demand a lot of money? For example, if he had a Ginter auto in Bo Sox uniform, it might go for a decent amount. I just wanted to hear your take on this since Wakefield has a limited amount of certified autos.

I agree with Tramers. Unless it's a short print, I wouldn't see that card bringing much money. He's one of those "hometown heroes" that fans loved, but he won't garner big prices, like a Jack McDowell. Heck, McDowell even won a Cy Young and you can still get a certified auto of his for $8.

Is the Red Sox fan base really enough to get high prices? In his 19 seasons, he made the All Star team once, telling me he's not very popular outside of Beantown.

Sure, he has 200 wins...after 19 seasons. He's 200-180, which puts him 480th in all time win percentage and 109th for wins. Where is he ranked in career ERA? Not even in the top 1,000 according to Baseball Almanac (although that list does have some guys with very short careers).

He's far from a baseball great. A baseball good, but not a baseball great, and so I don't think he will draw interest on a large level outside of Boston's fanbase.

I would want to buy one! I have seen a few of his autos and they sold pretty well, over 60 if I remember right. Of course there aren't many out there so that helps elevate price. I would definitely buy one if they came out in a new product.

No he isn't a baseball great. But he is a Red Sox great. Now go and try to find a Tim Wakefield certified autograph card. There's maybe 100 of them out there and they sell very well. I don't think I've ever seen one sell for less than $50. Even if he wasn't a shortprint in a new set his autos would sell very well. They might not sell to people who aren't Red Sox fans but there are a ton of us out there and it would be a better sale then 75% of any other auto card from a new set.

as rebelpawn already stated Wakefield auto's always go for big money. I would definitely go after an on-card autograph in a new Topps release.

I wish Donruss would have added this card to one of their Recollection sets...

A guy that only lasted as long as he did because he threw a knuckle-ball. Had a few decent years, and spent sometime in a reliever-role and as a starting pitcher. He is ok, I have no interest in his cards.
