My $130 bid trumped on a Ryne Sandberg 1997 SPX Grand Finale was trumped on eBay at the final second. I'd like some informed opinions on whether I should have bid more, I dodged a bullet, or my maximum bid was about right.

Those are fairly tough to find, but since it was listed incorrectly, it might have gone a little lower than normal, but I'm guessing those that knew what was going on, were all there at the end to watch it sell. It had a ton of watchers, I bid (way outbid). I hope most of the die hard Sandberg collectors knew exactly what it was and bid accordingly.

What are the differences between grand finale and the gold version?

Looking on comc, and the golds actually look kind of "bronze", at least a dark gold color.

I have a vlad and assumed it gold. How can you tell?

The hologram is gold on the Grand Finale. On the regular Gold, it is the standard silver.

The player photo hologram. Makes them pretty easy to ID.

My bid didn't even make it in, and I thought it was a significant bid.

Where were you willing to go on the card, if you don't mind me asking?

I placed a $100 snipe on it, and it didn't even register because of yours and the winner's bids.

I was very apprehensive about bidding what I did, but given that there were 3 or 4 of us willing to go triple digits, I guess it sold for about what it should have.

Grand Finale's are definately a tough find. With only 50 unnumbered sets made, many are likely collecting dust with the owners not realizing what they have. Many are listed as golds and sometimes are a steal. Not necessarily the case in this auction. Grand Finale's are a double edged sword in my opinion. You can spend a ton to get one and be happy to add it to your collection only to see one listed down the road as a gold with a cheap BIN for a fraction of what you paid.

Just glad I have mine out of the way :D

I had the same snipe. Obviously didn't go through.

Here's how my my chase went:

1. Sold cheap on ebay (seller didn't know what they had)
2. Happened to be bought by someone on FCB
3. Was able to work out a deal for it

look amazing in person
